  • Poetic Fabulations

Open Access•Anita Girvan, Maya Seshia et al.•ARTICLE•Atlantis•2024

This collective work (four authors) demonstrates how persistent structures in higher education are mobilized in the signing of the Scarborough Charter on Anti-Black Racism and Black Inclusion in Canadian Higher Education: Principles, Actions, and Accountabilities. We read this event against the grain, as an act requiring relation-building and accountability. Recognizing the promises and risks of this work, and inspired by Black Feminist/coalition…

  • Ecologies of De/colonization

    Open Access•Anita Girvan, Astrid V Pérez Piñán•ARTICLE•Studies in Social Justice•2024•References: 7

In this photo essay, we take readers through ecologies of de/colonization that we engage with in our creative methodology of walking and talking. As academics called upon to do equity, diversity and decolonization work in colonial institutions, we reflect on our location in lək̓wəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ lands (“Victoria, BC, Canada”) and the circuits that extend to the Caribbean archipelago of our origins and families (Borikén/Puerto Rico and Jamaica). W…

  • Tracing E-race-sures, Finding Reclamations

Anita Girvan, Makayla Lesann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Canadian Studies•2023

At this critical time of reckoning with histories and present legacies in Canada, we come together as an emergent collaborative research team to reflect on how education and wider systems in this country have shaped our individual and collective experiences. As we affirm our practice of visiting and sharing histories from embodied perspectives and commitments in order to build relations, we find echoes in the concepts and practices of Métis and B…

  • Carbon Footprints as Cultural–Ecological Metaphors

    Anita Girvan•BOOK•Carbon Footprints As Cultural-Ecolo…•2017

Through an examination of carbon footprint metaphors, this books demonstrates the ways in which climate change and other ecological issues are culturally and materially constituted through metaphor. The carbon footprint metaphor has achieved a ubiquitous presence in Anglo-North American public contexts since the turn of the millennium, yet this metaphor remains under-examined as a crucial mediator of political responses to the urgent crisis of cl…

  • Trickster carbon

    Open Access•Anita Girvan•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Ecology•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 7

This article proposes the idea of the trickster figure as a way to account for the shifting material, and cultural properties of carbon in the cultural politics of climate change. Combining scientific understandings of allotropy in chemistry – describing the property of certain elements to manifest in various highly diverse forms – and the insights of Caribbean trickster stories, trickster carbon enables novel understandings of the multiple worki…
