Planning histories and the environmental turn
To what extent are planning histories influenced by the environmental turn currently affecting many areas of research related to the transformation of planetary landscapes? This question is particularly relevant when considering that cities and plans are not always central in recent studies on the origins of the environmental crisis. The paper reviews a few recent and less recent historiographical trends to argue that planning histories have the …
The role of digital financial inclusion in China on urban—rural disparities in healthcare expenditures
Our research reveals that DFI plays an important role in bridging the urban-rural gap in healthcare expenditures. This finding provides new information for addressing the issue of urban-rural healthcare inequality in China. Chinese government needs to accelerate the construction of digital infrastructure and increase the penetration rate of digital tools in rural areas to promote the beneficial effects of DFI. Additionally, it is also necessary f…
Architectural history, planning history, and the environmental perspective
Over the last decade, architectural history has responded to the climate crisis by strongly integrating environmental topics into its research agenda. The change has been so dramatic that it can be referred to as a paradigm shift within the discipline. The article reviews research tendencies in the environmental history of architecture by discussing the papers presented at a conference organized in Reykjavik in 2023 and several recent publication…

Introduction. Histoire et quartiers
In recent years, the history of neighborhoods has seen a resurgence of interest, with regard to questions about the qualitative objectives of institutional urban planning practices, and the return to human scale and proximity1. In the era of flow and trade globalization, inscribing architectural and urban spatial recomposition in time is expected to give meaning and encourage the anchoring and appropriation of space. Renewing the mobilization of …

Reassessing the Legacy of Twentieth-Century New Towns
Nineteenth-Century Municipal Engineers in Turin
The growth of municipal technical offices in nineteenth-century Turin was closely linked with the emergence of new functions and powers of the city's local administration. The development of Turin's local bureaucracy followed a different chronology, less influenced by national political events than might be assumed. From the early 1850s until the early 1880s, Turin's technical bureaucracy was in fact organized around the personal skills and power…

Public works and municipal government in two Italian capital cities
The article draws a comparison between nineteenth-century Turin and Rome, linking the growth of technical bureaucracies in the municipal institutions of both cities to the local struggles for control over urban space. In both post-1848 Turin and post-1870 Rome, the implementation of new institutional reforms offered local city councils an opportunity to gain more power and autonomy than they had enjoyed in the recent past. The organization and th…
