  • Stratigraphically Homogeneous Zones’: Automated construction and restitution procedure for engineering geology use

    Open Access•Alessia D’agostino, A Porchia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2025

This study presents an automated method for the construction and spatialization of stratigraphic columns, facilitating the creation of maps of Stratigraphically Homogeneous Zones (SHZ). This approach integrates GIS tools with custom Python scripts, streamlining the manual process traditionally used in Seismic Microzonation (SM) studies according to Italian standards. Our method allows for rapid, scalable processing and provides a detailed geologi…

  • International Migration Responses to Modern Europe’s Most Destructive Earthquake: Messina and Reggio Calabria, 1908

Open Access•Yannay Spitzer, Gaspare Tortorici et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•2025•References: 3

The Messina-Reggio Calabria Earthquake (1908) was one of the most devastating natural disasters in modern European history. It occurred when overseas mass emigration from southern Italy was at its peak and international borders were open, making emigration a readily available option for relief. We find that the earthquake had no large positive impact on emigration on average. There were, however, heterogeneous responses, with a more positive effe…

  • Male and female self-selection during the Portuguese mass migration, 1885–1930

Open Access•Martín Fernández, Martín Eduardo Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•Explorations in Economic History•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 35

  • Structural geology of the eastern termination of the Mt. Kumeta-Alcantara line (NE sicily, Italy)

Open Access•Alessandro Foti, Francesco Pavano et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

In this paper we show data from new detailed geological-structural field surveys, integrated with preliminary photogrammetric analysis, presented in a 1:10,000 scale geological map. The field-based investigations covered an area of about 60-km2, located at the southern termination of the Calabrian Forearc, in NE Sicily (Italy), at the intersection of two key regional-scale fault systems. These are represented by the Peloritani Sole-Thrust, along …

  • British-French Technology Transfer from the Revolution to Louis Philippe (1791-1844): Evidence from Patent Data

Open Access•Alessandro Nuvolari, Gaspare Tortorici et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 56

This paper examines the patterns of technology transfer from Britain to France during the early phases of industrializing using a dataset comprising all patents granted in France in the period 1791-1844. Exploiting the peculiarities of French legislation, we construct an array of patent quality indicators and investigate their determinants. We find that patents filed by British inventors or French inventors with personal connections to British in…

  • Globalization, agricultural markets and mass migration: Italy, 1881–1912

Open Access•Rowena Gray, Gaia Narciso et al.•ARTICLE•Explorations in Economic History•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 25

  • Geological map of the Tellaro River Valley (Hyblean Foreland, southeastern Sicily, Italy)

Open Access•Gino Romagnoli, Stefano Catalano et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2015

The Geological map of the Tellaro River Valley, at the 1:25.000 scale, portrays the main stratigraphic and structural features that developed in a 300 km2 wide area of the African foreland in southeastern Sicily (Hyblean Foreland). The NW-SE-oriented Tellaro River Valley marks the transition between the eastern (Siracusa Plateau) and western (Ragusa Plateau) domains of the foreland, where a post-Tortonian structural depression, here designated as…
