  • The Political Ethics of German Soccer Fans

Open Access•Arne Koch, John Hanson et al.•ARTICLE•AUC STUDIA TERRITORIALIA•2025

This article investigates the complex interplay between soccer fandom and political activism in Germany, emphasizing fan groups’ emergence as significant political stakeowners. It explores the evolution of fan engagement from sports-specific to broader societal issues, illustrating how supporters articulate dissent against commercialization and advocate for ethical governance within clubs. Through representative examples of various clubs, from St…

  • Thomas Aquinas and the Qualification of Monastic Labor

    Open Access•John Hanson, Jeffrey Hanson•ARTICLE•Religions•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 5

Early monastic communities in Egypt were veritable laboratories for the practice of Christian virtue; perhaps surprisingly, they were also large-scale coordinated communities of labor. That manual labor should have been part of anchoritic life is not obvious; given that hermits were leaving the cities and the usual occupations of life in the world, there might be a question as to why they would seemingly return to such occupations having sought t…

  • Estimating the ‘Missing’ Houses of Silchester

Open Access•G Ortman, John W Hanson et al.•ARTICLE•Britannia•2023

Estimating the numbers of residences, and thus the residential densities and populations, of ancient settlements remains a significant problem. This is true even for ‘greenfield’ sites due to the differential visibility of structures made of different materials in aerial and geophysical surveys. In this paper, we take advantage of statistical relationships among elements of the built environments of Roman cities in Britannia and more broadly acro…

  • The Oneness of Love in Works of Love

    Open Access•John Hanson•ARTICLE•Religions•2023•Referencias: 8

Kierkegaard's claim that God just is love implies that love is ultimately one reality. Indeed, on more than one occasion, Kierkegaard will make this point explicitly as well as implicitly by frequently asserting the oneness of love. For example, early on in Works of Love, he states plainly that "this love for the neighbor is not related as a type to other types of love. Erotic love is defined by the object; friendship is defined by the object; on…

  • The Architecture of Happiness

Open Access•T Lomas, Meike Bartels et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion Review•2022

Happiness is an increasingly prominent topic of interest across academia. However, relatively little attention has been paid to how it is created, especially not in a multidimensional sense. By ‘created’ we do not mean its influencing factors, for which there is extensive research, but how it actually forms in the person. The work that has been done in this arena tends to focus on physiological dynamics, which are certainly part of the puzzle. Bu…

  • That is Giving a Banquet”

    Open Access•John Hanson•ARTICLE•Journal of Religious Ethics•2022

Recent readings of Kierkegaard's Works of Love have admirably shown how his apparent reservations about romantic love can be deflected on his own terms by imbuing them with some of the moral rigor of neighbor‐love. This paper argues however that these readings must be complemented by the reverse argument, which would show how some of the qualities of romantic loves are in fact preserved in neighbor‐love. By drawing on his dialectics of sensate lo…

  • Philosophies of Work in the Platonic Tradition

John Hanson, Jeffrey Hanson•BOOK•Philosophies of Work in the…•2022•Citada por: 2

"The Platonic tradition affords extraordinary resources for thinking about the meaning and value of work. In this historical survey of the tradition, Jeff Hanson draws on the work of its major thinkers to explain why our contemporary vocabulary for appraising labor and its rewards is too narrow and cramped. By tracing out the Platonic lineage of work Hanson is able to argue why we should be explaining its value for appraising it as an element of …

  • Despair as a Threat to Meaning

    Open Access•John Hanson•ARTICLE•Philosophies•2021

The question of meaning in life has enjoyed renewed attention in analytic discourse over the last few decades. Despite the apparently “existential” quality of this topic, existential philosophy has had little impact on this re-energized conversation. This paper draws on Kierkegaard’s The Sickness unto Death in order to challenge the objectivist theory of meaning in life. According to that theory, a meaningful life is one replete with objective go…

  • After actuality

John Hanson, Jeffrey Hanson•ARTICLE•History of European Ideas•2021•Referencias: 9

This article engages Frater Taciturnus’s ‘Letter to the Reader’ to argue for a religious aesthetics in Kierkegaard. This religious aesthetics is designed to purify the passions and help the believer ‘see’ the religious ideal, but also to confront the aesthetic spectator with the religious reality of her own situation. My claim for this revised reading of religious poetics in Kierkegaard derives from Taciturnus’s view of a superior form of religio…

In addition extensive data on pupils’ home background was collected at both ages and added to the individual test records. Some 4…

Rescue excavation between 1988 and 1990 in advance of river erosion examined a substantial part of the small medieval rural hospital of St Giles by Brompton Bridge and later post-medieval farm. Established in the latter half of the twelfth century for the infirm, including lepers, the hospital layout consisted of a detached stone chapel adjacent to the river crossing, with a timber hall to the west. This hall was destroyed by fire, and a sequence…
