Estimating the Effects of Restitution Penalties on Juvenile Recidivism
This study investigates the potential causal relationship between the assignment of financial restitution penalties to juvenile offenders and subsequent recidivism, defined as being sentenced for a new offense within the next two years. Although the use of financial penalties on juveniles is prevalent, there is limited research on its potential link to reoffending. Using a dataset of all juvenile offenders in the state of Pennsylvania from 2015 t…

Measuring links between labor monopsony and the gender pay gap in Brazil
This paper focuses on gender differences in job mobility and earnings for workers in Brazil. Monopsony theory suggests a link between the wage elasticity of labor supply and wage penalties. Should one group of workers be less elastic in their supply choices, that group is predicted to earn less than others. To measure wage elasticity, I estimate a hazard model on voluntary job separations using the RAIS , a linked employer-employee dataset that c…

Analyzing Rural Versus Urban Differences in Career Dissatisfaction and Plans to Leave Among Pennsylvanian Physicians
PURPOSE: This study estimates whether physicians in rural Pennsylvania have higher odds of career dissatisfaction and plans to leave patient care in the next 6 years, compared to their urban counterparts. Rural-urban differences were estimated across specific subgroups of physicians (gender, race, and specialty) and with regard to specific sources of career dissatisfaction. METHODS: The 2012 Pennsylvania Health Workforce Survey of Physicians allo…
Disablement and Health
In this chapter we address what is known about the nature and determinants of the health inequalities faced by disabled people. First, we discuss the nature of the association between health and disability. Second, we briefly review what is known about the (poorer) health status of disabled people. Third, in the main part of this chapter, we discuss some of the processes that may link disability and health. Finally, we conclude by identifying the…
Career satisfaction of P ennsylvanian dentists and dental hygienists and their plans to leave direct patient care
Results suggest that employment of dental hygienists is associated with lower career dissatisfaction and extended careers for dentists. However, a number of dentist characteristics are associated with difficulty hiring hygienists, including rural practice, nonwhite race, and solo ownership. Only 37.5 percent of hygienists work in a single, full-time job, an outcome related to lower dissatisfaction and extended careers for hygienists. Characterist…
