Kairos study protocol: A multidisciplinary approach to the study of school timing and its effects on health, well-being and students’ performance
Recent evidence from chronobiology, chssronomedicine and chronopsychology shows that the organisation of social time (e.g., school schedules) generally does not respect biological time. This raises concerns about the impact of the constant mismatch between students’ social and internal body clocks on their health, well-being and academic performance. The present paper describes a protocol used to investigate the problem of (de) synchronisation of…
Does Early Career Unemployment at the Peak of a Recession Leave Economic Scars? Evidence from Estonia
On average, individuals who have experienced unemployment are disadvantaged in terms of later lifetime earnings. Those who graduated from school during the Great Recession are especially prone to have experienced bouts of unemployment, but we know little about how much they suffer in later career earnings. Estonia was heavily hit by the economic crisis but recovered relatively quickly. This study explores poverty and earnings effects for a cohort…
The Effects of Unemployment and Insecure Jobs on Well-Being and Health: The Moderating Role of Labor Market Policies
Labor market insecurities have been growing in Europe and previous research has illustrated that unemployment and insecure jobs negatively affect individuals’ well-being and health. Although empirical evidence suggests that these effects vary substantially across different welfare states, we still know little about the moderating role of specific labor market policies. Taking a cross-national comparative perspective, this article investigates how…
Out of Time: The Consequences of Non-standard Employment Schedules for Family Cohesion
Does Ethnicity Matter in Intentions to Study Abroad? Analysis of High School Students in Estonia
This paper examines factors that shape intentions to study abroad. Previous research highlights the importance of various forms of capital—human, economic, social, cultural, and mobility capital—as well as personality traits in the formation of the intention to complete education in foreign countries. Our specific focus is on ethnic differences in going to study abroad. The data comes from a representative survey of high school graduates in Eston…
Nonstandard Work Schedules, Couple Desynchronization, and Parent-Child Interaction: A Mixed-Methods Analysis
Many children live in households where either one or both parents work nonstandard schedules in the evening, night, or weekend. This study tests two competing hypotheses of whether nonstandard schedules result in lower levels of parent-child interaction or in more time with children. Using the first wave of the Netherlands Kinship Panel Study of 1,266 couples with young children and data from semistructured individual ( N = 27) qualitative interv…
Nonstandard Work Schedules and Partnership Quality: Quantitative and Qualitative Findings
This article questions existing findings and provides new evidence about the consequences of nonstandard work schedules on partnership quality. Using quantitative couple data from The Netherlands Kinship Panel Study (NKPS) (N = 3,016) and semistructured qualitative interviews (N = 34), we found that, for women, schedules with varying hours resulted in greater relationship dissatisfaction than for men. Men with young children who worked varying ho…
Men’s Late Careers and Career Exits in Estonia
The paper will compare the labour market moves of male late career workers in Estonia in the 1980s and 1990s. The question asked here is whether and to what extent the social and economic changes affected the intensity and directions of job moves of late career workers and also their labour market exit patterns. Another question posed here is the role of both individual as well as structural factors in the process of older workers' adjusting to t…
