How do anxiety and depression trajectories vary among Black, Latinx, and Afro-Latinx sexual minority young men? Uncovering variation in development with intersectional subgroups
The present study investigated whether the patterns of intersectional stigma experiences were associated with differences in the developmental, parallel trajectories of anxious and depressive symptoms across the transition to adulthood among Black, Latinx, and Afro-Latinx cisgender sexual minority young men. Data were from the Healthy Young Men's Cohort Study collected semiannually from 2016 to 2020 in Los Angeles and included 426 cisgender Black…
Using Text-to-speech (TTS) for Audio Computer-assisted Self-interviewing (Acasi)
We evaluate the use of text-to-speech (TTS) technology for audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (ACASI). We use a quasi-experimental design, comparing the use of recorded human voice in the 2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth with the use of TTS in the first year of the 2011-2013 survey, where the essential survey conditions are largely unchanged. We examine substantive distributions of ACASI items, item missing data rates, interviewe…
Failure and Delay in Initial Treatment Contact After First Onset of Mental Disorders in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication
CONTEXT: An understudied crucial step in the help-seeking process is making prompt initial contact with a treatment provider after first onset of a mental disorder. OBJECTIVE: To provide data on patterns and predictors of failure and delay in making initial treatment contact after first onset of a mental disorder in the United States from the recently completed National Comorbidity Survey Replication. DESIGN AND SETTING: Nationally representative…
Sample designs and sampling methods for the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Studies (CPES)
This paper provides an overview of the probability sample designs and sampling methods for the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Studies (CPES): the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS‐R), the National Study of American Life (NSAL) and the National Latino and Asian American Study of Mental Health (NLAAS). The multi‐stage sample design and respondent selection procedures used in these three studies are based on the University of Mich…
The US National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS‐R): Design and field procedures
The National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS‐R) is a survey of the prevalence and correlates of mental disorders in the US that was carried out between February 2001 and April 2003. Interviews were administered face‐to‐face in the homes of respondents, who were selected from a nationally representative multi‐stage clustered area probability sample of households. A total of 9,282 interviews were completed in the main survey and an additional 5…
The epidemiology of major depressive episodes: Results from the International Consortium of Psychiatric Epidemiology (Icpe) surveys
Absence of a common diagnostic interview has hampered cross‐national syntheses of epidemiological evidence on major depressive episodes (MDE). Community epidemiological surveys using the World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview administered face‐to‐face were carried out in 10 countries in North America (Canada and the US), Latin America (Brazil, Chile, and Mexico), Europe (Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, an…
The World Health Organization Health and Work Performance Questionnaire (HPQ)
This report describes the World Health Organization Health and Work Performance Questionnaire (HPQ), a self-report instrument designed to estimate the workplace costs of health problems in terms of reduced job performance, sickness absence, and work-related accidents-injuries. Calibration data are presented on the relationship between individual-level HPQ reports and archival measures of work performance and absenteeism obtained from employer arc…
The Epidemiology of Major Depressive Disorder: Results From the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R)
CONTEXT: Uncertainties exist about prevalence and correlates of major depressive disorder (MDD). OBJECTIVE: To present nationally representative data on prevalence and correlates of MDD by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) criteria, and on study patterns and correlates of treatment and treatment adequacy from the recently completed National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R). DESIGN: Face-to-face h…

Making It at the Top: Women and Minority Faculty in the Academic Labor Market
In this article, we argue that the small number of women and minority faculty in tenured and tenure-track positions in elite research universities is not simply the result of overt racism and sexism. Nor is it simply the result of a relatively small pool of qualified candidates. Rather, significant barriers to women and minority faculty are found in the character of the academic market itself. We focus on the academic market as an internal labor …
