Christianity and Farmed Animal Welfare
The Christian Ethics of Farmed Animal Welfare project is an interdisciplinary engagement between Christian ethics and veterinary animal welfare science, with major UK churches and other organisations as partners. This article gives an account of the project and summarises its findings. The project concludes that Christians have reason to be concerned about farmed animal welfare, and that current animal welfare science provides good evidence conce…
The Implications of James Cone’s Critique of Barth and Barthians for the Practice of Academic Christian Theology
Fifty years have passed since James Cone wrote _Black Theology and Black Power _ critiquing the unbarthian ways Barth was being appropriated in Europe and North America. This article identifies key weaknesses in a Barthian theological method that may explain the conspicuous silence of White Barthian theologians in response to Cone’s critique. It suggests three lessons for ethical theological enquiry arising from attention to Cone’s analysis: firs…
On Animals
This book presents an authoritative and comprehensive survey of human practice in relation to other animals, together with a Christian ethical analysis building on the theological account of animals which David Clough developed in On Animals Volume I: Systematic Theology (2012). It argues that a Christian understanding of other animals has radical implications for their treatment by humans, with the human use and abuse of non-human animals for fo…
Beyond ecotheology
This piece offers an outline argument for moving beyond ecotheology, not because its project was mistaken or the challenges to which it responded have been overcome, but because ecotheology is too important to be left to ecotheologians. Instead, the paper argues that no responsible theological project can afford to neglect the concerns that ecotheology has championed up to this point
