By collectively concentrating on the theme of political symbolism in modern Europe, the con-tributors to this volume have cho-sen to honor a revered teacher and colleague by developing a set of variations on one of his primary scholarly concerns. The essays deal with familiar domains in the history of European culture: reli-gion, science, philosophy, theater, popular culture, and social ideologies. • The Communal Basis of Pre-1800 Peasant Uprisings in Western Europe

    David Warren Sabean, David Sabean•ARTICLE•Comparative Politics•1976•Cited by: 9•References: 1

One of the common features of peasant revolts in Early Modern Europe was their basis in communal life. Many uprisings stemmed from the desire of one faction in a village to control access to resources within the community, or to exclude others from the franchise. Peasants often revolted to keep out the outsider, either the tax official, the conscription officer, or the absentee landlord. But we cannot think of a single case where peasants attempt…

  • German agrarian institutions at the beginning of the sixteenth century: Upper Swabia as an example

David Warren Sabean, David Sabean•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•1975•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This paper deals with three dynamic factors leading to rural social change in the years before 1525. The rise of population changed man/land ratios, brought alterations in inheritance customs, and helped create a class of landless agricultural labourers. Alterations in the nature of market relationships changed the balance between city and country and introduced new wage relationships in the countryside with the putting out system. Increasing art…

Open Access•David Warren Sabean, David Sabean•ARTICLE•Annales Histoire Sciences Sociales•1972
