Outcomes of the Decision to Terminate Drug Abuse: An Application of Rational Choice Theory
Cusson and Pinsonneault's theory of desistance from criminal behavior and Trevor Bennet's analysis of drug-taking careers provide the theoretical underpinnings for this study of 180 young men with histories of substance abuse. All the participants were living in the community and had decided to quit at least once previously. One hundred were drug-free; eighty were active users. The hypothesis predicted that the decision to quit would have had the…
The Willingness to Seek Help: Its Role in Social Workers' Professional Commitment
Providing help to persons in need is the central theme of the social work profession. The three elements essential to this process are the person offering the assistance, the assistance itself, and the person receiving it. The focus here is on the person offering the help and to what degree that person is willing to request help when he or she needs it. Social workers differ with regard to their willingness to seek help, and this study employs a …
Measuring the Willingness to Seek Help
This paper describes the creation and validation of an instrument designed to measure an individual's willingness to seek help. The instrument, a questionnaire with twenty-five statements in Likert format, is based on the theoretical perspective of Alan Keith-Lucas, who perceived the willingness of a person to seek help as contingent on three conditions: recognition of the need for outside assistance, readiness for self-disclosure, and willingnes…

The Willingness to Seek Help: A Cross-National Comparison
Building on previous research that provides the basis for treating the willingness to seek help as a stable attitudinal set, present in varying degrees in differentpersons, and predictive of behavior, this study addresses two questions: First, to what extent is the willing ness to seek help associated with culture? Second, how do the factors influencing willingness to seek help differ across cultures? Young adults in Hungary, Israel, and the Unit…
Oncologists' attitudes to treatment of cancer patients
This study, based on questionnaire responses of 46 Israeli oncologists, explores the factors influencing these physicians' beliefs and decisions regarding chemo- and radiation therapy. A simple discriminant analysis identified five physician-related variables with a significant impact on the subjects' attitudes to treatment: age, sex, years of oncology experience, pity for the patient, and whether they believed all cancer patients suffer from pai…

The Ethics of Social Work Supervision Revisited

A Multidimensional Approach to the Problem of Crime Seriousness
The interest of the discipline in explaining the attribution of severity to offenses has been enduring but the methods of the past have contributed little to our understanding of the concept of severity and its components. This study introduces a new method designed to address the methodological and theoretical concerns of working criminologists. Randomly selected respondents sorted index cards containing descriptions of specific crimes. First, t…
Applying the "Unmotivated" Label to Clients in Social Service Agencies
This study, based on the responses of a sample of 245 public-sector social workers, explores the factors associated with labelling clients "unmotivated." The variables examined relate to clients, workers, agencies, and the interactions among these elements. Multiple regression analysis reveals that the best predictor variables are client-related. The client most likely to be rated by the social worker as lacking in motivation is of lower socioeco…
