  • Crossing boundaries towards expansive learning: Methodological affordances of video data

Tamara Handy, Elizabeth B Kozleski et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Research…•2026

This paper underscores the methodological affordances of using video data as a boundary object to foster expansive learning. Based on a study conducted in a school in the war-affected Northern province of Sri Lanka, we demonstrate how expansive learning was catalyzed by video elicitation practices embedded in the methodology, revealing underlying tensions. In research contexts that examine complex systems such as classrooms – where teachers, stud…

Open Access•Molly Baustien Siuty, Maggie R Beneke et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Educational Research•2025

Open Access•Maggie R Beneke, Margaret R Beneke et al.•ARTICLE•Teachers College Record The Voice…•2022

Context: Geographies of exclusion (e.g., segregated special education classrooms, school district zoning) are constituted through intersecting oppressive ideologies (e.g., ableism, racism, classism) that co-naturalize notions of “normalcy” and deviance and yield harmful consequences for disabled children of Color. Geographies of exclusion dynamically contribute to and constitute teacher candidates’ feelings about themselves and their social world…

  • Examining youth agency in post-conflict, Sri-Lankan school settings

    Tamara Handy, Elizabeth B Kozleski•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021•References: 13

The authors report on a youth agency study conducted in post-conflict school settings in Sri Lanka. In a three-month field-based, qualitative research study, youth collaborated with the first author to explain and expand on their interviews. Their candor and concern for ensuring that the researcher understood the rationales behind their actions helped to reveal the agentic nature of their responses to situations at school. In doing so they helped…

  • Sharpening Justice Through DisCrit: A Contrapuntal Analysis of Education

    Open Access•Subini Ancy Annamma, Tamara Handy•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•2021•Cited by: 7•References: 28

Calls for justice-centered education approaches have gained traction over the years. Yet given the entrenched inequities that disproportionately harm multiply-marginalized students of color, it is evident that they remain incomplete. Using a specific incident as our launching point, we explore current conceptualizations of justice through a disability critical race theory (DisCrit) contrapuntal reading of four prolific intellectuals whose work is…

  • Animating Discipline Disparities through Debilitating Practices: Girls of Color and Inequitable Classroom Interactions

Open Access•Subini Ancy Annamma, Tamara Handy et al.•ARTICLE•Teachers College Record The Voice…•2020

Context Girls of Color are overrepresented in school disciplinary actions based on subjectively judged, minor infractions. Focus of Study We sought to uncover the processes that animate the statistics of overrepre-sentation of …

  • DisCrit solidarity as curriculum studies and transformative praxis

    Subini Ancy Annamma, Tamara Handy•ARTICLE•Curriculum Inquiry•2019•Cited by: 15•References: 10

Classroom and behaviour management are often touted as ways to build relationships in the classroom. Yet conceptions of classroom and behaviour management often focus on controlling or eradicating student behaviour; these carceral logics limit the ways educators can build classroom relationships focused on love and respect. Moreover, classroom and behaviour management are often rooted in punitive, top–down approaches wherein practices are dictate…
