  • Elites, bodies, and gender: Women's appearance as class distinction

    Open Access•Anne Monier, A Mears•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 23

Despite the importance of both gender and elites in contemporary social life, few empirical works examine gender among the elite. With a focus on embodiment, we develop a gendered theory of elite display, grounded in ethnographic observations of two elite spaces in which women are prominent: VIP clubs and philanthropy galas in the U.S. and Europe. Using a Goffmanian perspective, we examine the micro-dynamics through which elite bodies express sta…

  • Approaching Circulations through their Actors: For a Sociology of Go-Betweens. The Case of the American Friends of French Cultural Institutions

    Open Access•Anne Monier, Jean-Yves Bart•ARTICLE•Biens Symboliques / Symbolic Goods•2023

While a number of studies on transnational philanthropy have been published, few have focused on the actors of these circulations. This is what this article sets out to do by examining the actors who make the circulation of philanthropy possible—the go-betweens—through the case of the American Friends of French cultural institutions. Drawing on a qualitative research conducted over the course of three years in France and in the United States, it …

    Open Access•Anne Monier•ARTICLE•Biens Symboliques / Symbolic Goods•2023

  • Leaving a Trace: Donor Plaques as Material Evidences of Generosity

    Open Access•Anne Monier•CHAPTER•What People Leave Behind•2022

Contemporary philanthropy relies on a gift/counter-gift process: a person making a donation receives benefits for it, mostly financial (tax deductions) or symbolic (recognition). Donor recognition is an important part of philanthropy and comes in many forms. One of them is donor plaques—on walls, signs, or objects/buildings—associated with naming, i.e., the material traces of recognition that have the name of the donor on them. The analysis of do…

  • The role of social capital in transnational elite philanthropy: The example of the American Friends groups of French cultural institutions

    Open Access•Anne Monier•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 10

As elites can be defined as those with power and resources, we focus on one of these resources—social capital—in a particular context: philanthropic organizations. Based on a qualitative empirical study conducted in France and in the USA on the American Friends of French cultural institutions, this article questions how the ‘spectrum’ of social capital can help understand transnational elite philanthropy and more specifically the relations betwee…

    Anne Monier•ARTICLE•Politix•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 4
