This article argues that whilst indigenous people are central to the Mexican president's official developmentalist discourse of bringing prosperity to the country's marginalised and poor, their needs during the COVID-19 pandemic have not been met and their interests have been sidelined. Whilst experiencing serious loss of trading revenue, negative impacts of misinformation, and lack of access to appropriate healthcare, indigenous Mexicans also fa…

  • Tracing Contradictions of Neoliberal Governmentality in Tijuana’s Sex Industry

    Open Access•Susanne Hofmann•ARTICLE•Anthropology Matters•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 4

My main concern in this article is to illustrate contradictions that neoliberal governmentality produces in the context of sex work in Tijuana. Neoliberal governmentality is a practice of ruling people that interweaves aspirations of individuals with the demands of the market. By theorising governmentality in the context of sex work in Tijuana, it is my intention to move beyond the limited discussion of voluntary versus forced prostitution, in or…

  • Trabalhar Em Espaços Inseguros

    Open Access•Susanne Hofmann•ARTICLE•Ambivalências•2015•References: 6

The essay addresses how bodily entrepreneurialism can function as a gateway to upward social mobility and how erotic capital can level existing social and economic inequalities and thus ac…
