  • Correlates of drive for muscularity: The role of anthropometric measures and psychological factors

    Open Access•Nickles I Chittester, Heather A Hausenblas•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2009•Cited by: 13•References: 14

Drive for muscularity (DM) is associated with anabolic steroid and supplement use, exercise dependence, eating pathology, and low self-esteem. However, only one study has examined how anthropometric measures are related to DM. To extend previous research, and to clarify the relationship between DM and anthropometric indices, 113 college-aged men completed self-report surveys and were assessed for body fat percentage, fat-free mass, and body mass …

  • Effects of Exercise Interventions on Body Image: A Meta-analysis

    Open Access•Anna Campbell, Heather A Hausenblas•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2009•Cited by: 10•References: 85

Our meta-analysis examined the impact of exercise interventions on body image; and participant, intervention, and design features associated with larger effects. We identified 57 interventions (with pre-and post-data for the exercise and control groups) examining the effects of exercise on body image. A small random effect indicated that exercise intervention conditions had improved body image compared to control conditions; and that participant …

  • Media Exposure of the Ideal Physique on Women’s Body Dissatisfaction and Mood: The Moderating Effects of Ethnicity

    Open Access•Ninoska Debraganza, Heather A Hausenblas•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Studies•2008

Although body image concerns are influenced by cultural and ethnic factors, most research on the media and body image has focused exclusively on Caucasians. The goal of this study was to examine whether ethnicity moderates the body dissatisfaction and mood of women exposed to media images portraying the ideal physique. Two ethnic groups of women (Caucasians and African Americans) viewed two sets of slides (mass media ideals and controls) and comp…

  • The Role of Exercise Dependence for the Relationship between Exercise Behavior and Eating Pathology: Mediator or Moderator

    Open Access•Brian J Cook, Brian Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 40

Our study examined the potential mediating or moderating effect of exercise dependence on the exercise-eating pathology relationship. Female university students ( N = 330) completed Internet-based self-report measures of exercise behavior, exercise dependence, and eating pathology. Exercise dependence served as a mediator for the relationship between exercise and eating pathology. This unidirectional causal model suggests that an individual's pat…

  • How Much is Too Much? The Development and Validation of the Exercise Dependence Scale

    Heather A Hausenblas, Danielle Symons Downs•ARTICLE•Psychology & Health•2002

This paper presents five studies with 2,420 total participants on the development and validation of the Exercise Dependence Scale (EDS), which is conceptualized based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV (APA, 1994) criteria for substance dependence, and differentiates among at-risk, nondependent-symptomatic, and nondependent-asymptomatic exercisers. Results of the studies revealed evidence for the a priori hypothesized components, accepta…

    Open Access•Heather A Hausenblas, C R Nigg et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•2002•References: 3

It is important to examine theoretically the determinants of exercise for middle school children because of the rapid decline in exercise during adolescence. The purpose for this study was to examine the validity of the Stages of Change (SOC) construct of the Transtheoretical Model with 387 middle school children. The students completed an SOC, barrier self-efficacy, and decisional balance questionnaire, as well as objective and self-report measu…

  • Application of the Theories of Reasoned Action and Planned Behavior to Exercise Behavior: A Meta-Analysis

Heather A Hausenblas, ALBERT V CARRON et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sport and Exercise…•1997

The primary purpose of this study was to use meta-analysis to statistically examine the utility of the theory of reasoned action (TRA) and the theory of planned behavior (TPB) for the explanation and prediction of exercise behavior. The results showed that the effect size for the relationships (a) between intention and exercise behavior, attitude and intention, attitude and exercise behavior, perceived behavioral control and intention, and percei…
