  • Is Not the Limit’

    Open Access•Maya Lavie‐ajayi, Larisa Shpakovskaya et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology and Sexuality•2026

Academic literature identifies two hegemonic discourses regarding aging women sexuality: the decline discourse, a traditional discourse which portrays the aging body as fragile and lacking sexual vitality; and the anti-decline discourse, a neoliberal discourse that encourages resisting the aging process to maintain sexual function. Feminist scholars have identified an alternative affirmative sexuality discourse, which challenges these perspective…

  • Changes in ageing women’s sexual subjectivity as seen from a life course perspective

    Open Access•A Temkina, Larisa Shpakovskaya et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2025•References: 34

This article explores the sexual subjectivity of women of post-reproductive age who seek partners on dating apps. The existing literature highlights the sexual subjectivity and agency of older women as contested and not sufficiently investigated. Even less research has been conducted on changes in the sexual subjectivity of women born in the USSR in the 1960s, with the liberalisation of sexual behaviour. The study is based on 45 interviews with w…

    Open Access•Larisa Shpakovskaya, Anna Temkina•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2025•References: 14

This article develops the concept of sexual citizenship by interpreting it as a form of belonging to a national moral community. Drawing on 30 semi-structured interviews, we examine the intimate partner choices of aging women migrants from the former Soviet Union who are actively seeking relationships in Israel and Finland. Adopting a postcolonial critical approach, we analyze these women’s partner preferences and demonstrate how they are shaped …

  • How the Everyday Logic of Pragmatic Individualism Undermines Russian State Pronatalism

The article examines the reproductive decisions of Russian urban middle‐class women. We look at women’s lives in the context of Russian pronatalist family policy and the official conservative gender ideology of 2019–2020. Based on biographical interviews with 35 young women, we focus on working mothers. The sample is composed of middle‐class mothers since their lifestyle serves as a cultural model for the whole Russian society. We reconstruct the…

  • How to be a Good Mother

    Larisa Shpakovskaya•ARTICLE•Europe Asia Studies•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Contemporary motherhood in Russia is a complex discursive field. A mother is supposed to possess significant knowledge in such domains as medicine, paediatrics, child psychology and nutritional science. She must also be a competent consumer of goods and services for children in order to conform to common understandings of ‘good’ motherhood. In the Russian context parenthood is semantically more associated with motherhood, a legacy of Soviet gende…
