  • Heteroglossic management in Instagram

    Open Access•Agurtzane Elordui•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistic Anthropology•2025•References: 32

In this paper, I explore the monolingual and polylingual stylistic behaviors on Instagram among Basque native young people within the project Gaztesare. By means of an in-depth qualitative study, I try to explain in which sense such monolingual and polylingual behaviors or styles are socially significant signs of difference (Gal & Irvine, 2019). The study reveals that those styles are organized in an axis of differentiation (Gal, 2016; Gal & Irvi…

  • How to be authentic on Instagram

    Open Access•Agurtzane Elordui, Jokin Aiestaran•ARTICLE•Pragmatics Quarterly Publication…•2023

This paper analyses the way young people negotiate their ‘real’ identity on Instagram, and how self-presentation can be developed by means of language choice. We draw our data from the corpus of the Gaztesare project. It contains the Instagram production of Basque university students who draw on an inventory of multilingual resources in their interactions. We consider Instagram to be a multi-scalar context in which different orders of indexicalit…

  • Basque in Instagram

    Open Access•Agurtzane Elordui, Jokin Aiestaran•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociolinguistics•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 22

This article analyses vernacularisation as a sociolinguistic change that brings with it an ideological fracturing of previous standard/vernacular indexical relations. It considers this ideological shift in the polycentric environment of social networks as mediated spaces where the values and functions of languages and varieties are re-evaluated and brought together. We argue that Instagram is a fertile space to study the hierarchies among Basque …

  • Jon Gotzon's syncretic bilingual parody

    Open Access•Agurtzane Elordui•ARTICLE•Language in Society•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 24

In normative, academic, and informative works on Basque there are constant debates on the boundaries of what is meant by 'authentic Basque' and, alongside that, by 'authentic Basque speaker'. In the current Basque media, these tensions are often addressed by means of creative practices, as in other minority contexts, by means of satire and other forms of humour, especially parody. In this work my subject is the character Jon Gotzon, who engages i…

  • Vernaculars in the stylization of new Basque youth media identities

  • Vernacularisation of media

    Agurtzane Elordui•ARTICLE•Multilingua•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 13

Vernaculars are increasingly used in media. They are considered to be stylistic resources to attract audiences and to construct media identities. That increase seems to be particularly significant in the case of youth media, which is also the case of Gaztea, a youth webradio station within the Basque public EITB group that we analyse in this work. Gaztea was created in the 90’s and, at that time, its whole production was in Standard Basque. In fa…
