Between Supportive and Equal Parenting: Exploring Middle‐Class Fathering in Romania Today
The profound restructuring that Romania underwent in the last decades of post‐socialist transformations and EU accession and membership has brought along changes in family life, including fathers’ involvement in parental responsibilities. Today, family arrangements incorporate gender equality values but also opposition to them, alongside an uneven revival of certain conservative norms. Drawing upon a relational approach that analyses the interpla…
What happened to my time during the Covid-19 lockdown? Parents’ subversive temporal regime strategies and their potential beyond the pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic prompted individuals to devise new temporal strategies in various spheres of their lives as a result of the spatial regulations imposed during the first lockdown. We apply Lisa Suckert’s theoretical model of ‘the capitalist time regime’ in the analysis of 68 interviews with parents of schoolchildren in seven European countries conducted during the first COVID-19 lockdown in spring 2020. We examine actors’ agency and capabili…
Inherent Attitudes or Misplaced Policies? Explaining Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy in Romania
Hesitancy toward COVID-19 vaccines was not particularly high in Romania at the beginning of the vaccination campaign. Nevertheless, the country became one of the laggards in the European Union in terms of vaccination rates. We provide an empirical explanation for this phenomenon based on a representative survey conducted in November–December 2021. We test the influence of various factors on vaccine hesitancy, such as personal experiences with the…
Settling for a "good enough" school: Contradictions of middle class reproduction in a small town in illiberal Hungary
The politics of the Orbán regime, in power in Hungary since 2010, are reshaping the possibilities for middle class reproduction and social mobility, as revealed through our analysis of parental dilemmas around school choice and future aspirations in a peripheral small town. As the main targets of re-industrialization and an important voter base for the regime, small towns are particularly relevant localities for studying the transformations of mi…
In this together”? Gender inequality associated with home‐working couples during the first Covid lockdown
The first lockdown, conferred upon us by the COVID‐19 outbreak in March 2020, created a unique, 3‐month‐long, laboratory‐like situation that made gender relations and women's work especially relevant for social research. Full‐time employed parents who switched to working from home were in a unique position to renegotiate the division of housework, childcare, or the management of school‐related tasks. This paper explores what happened to the gende…
The children, the family, the household, and myself, these made the quarantine up for me, and I was really happy with it’ – positive evaluations of the first Covid-19 lockdown among middle-class Hunga…
During the first COVID-19-related lockdown in the spring of 2020, working parents of young children were in difficult situation when having to manage the multiple burdens. In the studied societies, unpaid household tasks are considered to be primarily female responsibilities, intensive mothering ideals are widespread, and the access to flexible-work arrangements is marginal. In present study, we demonstrate how the above characteristics, created …
