How an Immigrant Buddhist Institution Negotiates Belonging in Poland: The Case of Thiên Phúc Pagoda
Migrant religious institutions tend to be focal places of intercultural encounters, serving as spaces for performing national, ethnic and religious identities, as well as, dialoging and negotiating belonging within the majority society. Thiên Phúc, a Vietnamese-operated pagoda functioning in Poland, serves as an important factor in the Vietnamese migrant community affairs, at the same time remaining virtually unknown to a broader Polish public. D…
Democracy after ‘the end of history’: Vietnamese diasporic liberalism in Poland
This paper traces the evolution of discourse about liberal democracy among Polish-Vietnamese pro-democracy activists, since their original mobilisations in the 1990s until today. Documenting what I call the two waves of Polish-Vietnamese activism, I describe how their ‘diasporic liberalism’ shifted from a stance of opposition to communist ideology, and from a belief in the ‘end of history’, to an approach focused on bottom-up democratisation and …
From Local Integration Toward Ghettoized Community With Transnational Connections: The Case of Vietnamese Pagodas in Poland
A case study of Vietnamese pagodas operating in Warsaw and its surroundings in the past 25 years shows the strength with which local social and spatial conditions affect adaptation strategies of migrant institutions. Taking into account, the ecological perspective and the discourse of Vietnamese community concerning the role of temples enabled us to answer the question about the role of pagodas in maintaining local and transnational intragroup bo…
Remaking the State or Creating Civil Society? Vietnamese Migrant Associations in Poland
In this essay, I analyze Vietnamese migrant associations in Poland, which have been routinely classified as “non-governmental organizations.” And yet, through their involvement in networks of relationships with a broad range of actors, including transnational connections with institutions back in Vietnam, they are in fact positioned in a liminal zone between the state and civil society. On the one hand, migrant associations are to a large extent …
Migration and cultural flows between Vietnam and Poland
Based on anthropological multi-sited fieldwork, this article examines the changing flows of Vietnamese migration to Poland, starting with educational migration in the 1950s up to the current economic-oriented migration. Changes in the geopolitical order, such as the collapse following the Cold War and the reorientation of foreign policy of both countries, affected the nature of Vietnamese migration and cultural transmission. The biographical narr…
The researcher as 'older sister', 'younger sister' and 'niece: Playing the roles defined by the Vietnamese pronominal reference system
The article considers various dimensions of researcher-informant relationships arising while leading research in Vietnam, which inevitably influence the fieldwork done among the Vietnamese. The specificity of the relationships between the anthropologist and the researched is caused by one of the most characteristic features of Vietnamese language - the complicated system of terms of address and reference, based on such factors as sex, age and soc…
Is Ancestor Worship a Vietnamese Tradition
In this report I analyze the way urban, educated Vietnamese understand and interpret the concept of “tradition,” relating it to their view of an important element of Vietnamese culture: ancestor worship. While analyzing material collected during my fieldwork in 2007–2008, I noticed that only some of the practices associated with ancestor worship were defined in terms of “tradition” by my informants. Some dimensions of this practice – especially c…
