  • Surge of peatland destruction by an advancing front of artisanal gold mining in Amazonia

Open Access•Natalie Daichendt, John P Janovec et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

Alluvial sediments bordering rivers of the southern Peruvian Amazon are enriched with gold, which has sustained an artisanal gold mining economy within a biodiversity hotspot for the past several decades. While it is clear that sweeping deforestation by miners has resulted in substantial loss of above-ground carbon stocks and increased greenhouse emissions, the region also harbors a sizable below-ground carbon stock in the form of peatlands, and …

  • Rivers and Streams

    Open Access•Edgardo M Latrubesse, Edward Park•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of…•2017

Streams are water bodies that flow downslope due to gravity through a natural open channel. The channel may contain water for at least part of the year. Streams with a substantial volume of water are considered rivers and typically reach the ocean, while others end in interior basins. River action is a dominant force responsible for shaping the Earth's surface and for transporting sediments from land to ocean. Rivers contain a remarkable biodiver…

  • Results confirm a relatively dry setting during the last glacial (MIS 3 and LGM) in Carajás, Amazonia

    Open Access•Carlos D’Apolito, Edgardo M Latrubesse et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Recent pollen rain data from lake Amendoim in Carajás (southeastern Amazonia) revealed a dominant forest formation spectrum where, locally, montane savannas occupy a larger proportion of the lake’s basin (>90%). From this surprising result, we learn that local savanna coverage may not necessarily be enough to influence and dominate the pollen spectrum recorded in the lake sediments when rainforest is widespread in the surrounding areas. Therefore…

    Open Access•Edgardo M Latrubesse, Alceu Rancy•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2000

  • A probable scenario for a dry climate in central Amazonia during the late Quaternary
