  • Care management and care provision for older relatives amongst employed informal care-givers

    Open Access•Carolyn J Rosenthal, Anne Martin-Matthews et al.•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•2007•Cited by: 6•References: 33

This paper examines care management, or ‘managerial care’, a type of informal care for older adults that has been relatively neglected by researchers. While previous research has acknowledged that care-giving may involve tasks other than direct ‘hands-on’ care, the conceptualisation of managerial care has often been vague and inconsistent. This study is the first explicitly to investigate managerial care amongst a large sample of carers. In our c…

  • Women with physical disabilities: Occupational impacts of ageing

Wendy Pentland, Mary Tremblay et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational Science•1999•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Research in various fields has established a myriad of significant differences between men and women, including: how they cope with disability; and how they age; all suggesting that studies of the impact of ageing on males with a disability cannot be generalized to disabled women. There has recently been some published work on ageing in men with disabilities. Even though roughly 60% of people with disabilities are female, there is virtually no re…

  • Wives of Institutionalized Elderly Men: The First Stage of the Transition to Quasi-Widowhood

    Open Access•Carolyn J Rosenthal, PAM DAWSON•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•1991•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Although much recent research has focused on family caregivers to the community-dwelling impaired elderly, little research has examined the experiences of family caregivers once the older relative enters a long-term care institution. This article focuses on the experiences of wives whose husbands have entered a long-term care institution. This process is conceptualized as a life course transition to quasi-widowhood, a term intended to capture the…

  • Generational Succession: The Passing on of Family Headship

    Carolyn J Rosenthal•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Family…•1987

Generational succession in families is investigated through the passing on of authority as embodied in the position of head of the family. Paths of succession and processes of timing and negotiation accompanying shifts in headship are examined. In a random sample of 464 residents of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, two-thirds of respondents said their family had a head; one-third also identified a past and future head. Headship transitions are analysed…

  • Kinkeeping in the Familial Division of Labor

Carolyn J Rosenthal•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1985•Cited by: 96

In a stratified random sample of adults aged 40 and older, interviewed in Hamilton, Ontario, more than half the respondents indicated that there was someone in their extended family who could be considered a kinkeeper, someone who works at keeping family members in touch with one another. In this study kinkeeping is viewed as a position in a familial division of labor. The paper examines the identification of the position, the work of kinkeeping,…
