  • Speech criticism, face-work, and communication responses: Towards a model of speech criticism and feedback

    Mikaela L Marlow•ARTICLE•Journal of Multicultural Discourses•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Speech criticism takes places when one person criticizes the speech of another person. Thus far, an abundance of research has been dedicated to understanding the impressions people develop about individuals who speak certain languages, with accents, or other social markers. However, situations of overt speech criticism have been minimally explored. This study addresses the communication responses that participants exhibited following an incident …

Since the innovative work of Labov and Lambert in the 1960s, scholars have approached the study of language attitudes from a variety of perspectives. Multi-disciplinary research has significantly enhanced our understanding of the cognitive and affective variables that shape language attitudes and communicative behaviors. After reviewing this empirical work, the chapter examines the major theoretical models that have emerged in this field of inqui…

  • We won't get ahead speaking like that!’ Expressing and managing language criticism in Hawai'i

    Mikaela L Marlow, H Giles•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•2010•Cited by: 7•References: 26

Ample research has explored language attitudes and speaker evaluations, yet it has not attended to direct incidences of language criticism. This article presents evidence demonstrating that a majority of those surveyed in Hawai'i have experienced language criticism. Coded data suggest that criticism takes place during employment, educational, familial, social and community interactions. People manage such episodes through a variety of communicati…

  • Who You Tink You, Talkin Propah? Hawaiian Pidgin Demarginalised

    Mikaela L Marlow, H Giles•ARTICLE•Journal of Multicultural Discourses•2008•Cited by: 11•References: 11

Communication accommodation, ethnolinguistic vitality and markedness model assumptions are applied to language ideologies and practices among Standard English and Hawai‘i Creole English (Pidgin) speakers in Hawai‘i. Respondents reported that Standard English should be spoken in most employment or scholastic interactions with tourists, teachers or mainlanders (‘Haoles’). However, Pidgin maintains widespread covert prestige and has resisted margina…

  • A Critical Test of Self-Enhancement, Exposure, and Self-Categorization Explanations for First- and Third-Person Perceptions

    Open Access•Scott A Reid, Byrne et al.•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•2007•Cited by: 18•References: 37

The third-person perception is the tendency for people to believe that others are more influenced by media content than themselves (W. P.Davison, 1983). The current study provides a critical test of self-enhancement, exposure, and self-categorization explanations for first- (i.e., self more influenced than others) and third-person perceptions. Male and female participants (N = 323) judged the extent to which pornography elicited "aroused and exci…

  • From the Roots to the Shoots: A Hawaiian Case Study of Language Revitalization and Modes of Communication

    Mikaela L Marlow, H Giles•ARTICLE•Annals of the International…•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Throughout history, multiple indigenous groups have had their cultural, linguistic, and communicative identities supplanted by the norms of dominant groups. Nonetheless, the communication discipline has given minimal attention to the preservation and revitalization of minority languages. This article begins to redress this oversight by means of a case study of the Hawaiian language. In the last 200 years, the Hawaiian Islands have been significan…
