  • Comparing objective and subjective measures of household resilience

Open Access•Tseday Jemaneh Mekasha, Tseday Mekasha et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2026

Resilience measurement has become central to targeting and evaluating development interventions, yet different measurement approaches may identify different households as vulnerable. This study compares objective and subjective measures of household resilience using data from 2000 households in rural Ethiopia. We analyze two objective measures (FAO’s RIMA and the TANGO method) alongside subjective indicators based on households’ self-assessed cap…

  • Cash grants to informal firms after Cyclone Idai

Open Access•Hanna Berkel, Peter Fisker et al.•ARTICLE•Disasters•2025•References: 48

This study investigates the effects of unconditional cash grants on informal manufacturing firms' recovery after Cyclone Idai struck Mozambique in 2019. Using a novel stratified adaptive cluster sampling approach, we collected representative panel data from firms in Beira (heavily affected) and Chimoio (less affected). Many firms demonstrated rapid initial recovery without financial intervention, but did not sustain this over time. Although the o…

  • Weather Shocks and Spatial Market Efficiency

César Salazar, Hailemariam Ayalew et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2019

The aim of this paper is to study the association between weather shocks (droughts and floods) and agricultural market performance in Mozambique. To do so, we employ a dyadic regression analysis on monthly maize prices, transport costs, and spatial identification of markets as well as droughts and flooded areas. Our estimates show that, while a drought reduces price differences between markets, price dispersion increases during flood periods, an …
