  • Body Movement in Relation to Type of Information (Person- And Nonperson-Oriented) and Cognitive Style (Field Dependence)1

    Open Access•Joaquin F Sousa-Poza, Robert Rohrberg•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1977•Cited by: 5•References: 26

The occurrence of body-focused (self-touching) and object-focused ("free") movements was investigated in a semi-structured interview involving two communicative tasks—person-oriented and non-person-oriented and two types of encoders (field-dependent and field-independent). Person-oriented information was accompanied by more continuous body touching movements (p < .001) and nonrepresentational (speech primacy) movements (p < .01). Representational…

  • Physiological Concomitants (I131 Uptake) of Field Dependence

    Joaquin F Sousa-Poza, Robert Rohrberg et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1976

Radioactive iodine uptake levels of two matched groups 11 field dependent and 11 field independent male euthyroid medical students were compared at the 7th, 24th, and 48th hr and at the 7th day. Significantly higher levels were observed in the field dependent group at all points except the 48th hr. These findings may reflect individual differences in adaptive psychoendocrine functioning

  • Alcohol, Field Dependence, and Dyadic Self-Disclosure

    Open Access•Robert Rohrberg, Robert G Rohrberg et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1976

16 dyads composed of subjects matched for cognitive style (8 field-dependent, 8 field-independent male medical students) discussed 5 topics—three “required” followed by 2 “free-choice.” Half of the dyads (4 field-dependent, 4 field-independent) had consumed .80 ml 94% alcohol per kg body weight; the other half received only a mixer (orange juice) with 4 ml alcohol poured on top. Amount of self-disclosure (total time spent in discussion) was not a…
