National circumstances matter: How climate change vulnerability and political instability affect greenhouse gas coverage in nationally determined contributions
Morpho-Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, and Radiocarbon Chronology of Suyanggae Sites, Focusing on Loc. VI, South Korea
Morpho-Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, and Radiocarbon Chronology of Suyanggae Sites, Focusing on Loc. VI, South Korea
We reconstruct the processes of sedimentation at the Suyanggae Paleolithic sites, geomorphologically characterized by fl uvial terraces in the Namhan River, the base level of which is higher than the present river bottom. The fl uvial sedimentary deposits, slope deposits, and paleosols are the main units of surfi cial deposits, constituting the site materials of Suyanggae Loc. VI. According to the representative profi les of the site, the deposit…
Health, Income, and Suicidal Ideation Among Older Adults in South Korea: A Gender Comparison
Lingering Male Breadwinner Norms as Predictors of Family Satisfaction and Marital Instability
Scholars have assumed that as gender revolutions are completed and societies achieve advanced levels of gender egalitarianism, married persons become happier, and marriages become stable. This study investigates how the norms about gender roles are associated with marital instability. The analysis is based on two propositions: (1) marital dissolution is an outcome of two rather distinct processes, deterioration of marital quality and formation of…
Divorce in South Korea: Doing Gender and the Dynamics of Relationship Breakdown
Climatic stages recorded in sediments of the Gunang Cave, South Korea
Recent Developments and Implications of Policies on Ethnic Return Migration in Korea
The Visit and Employment Program (VEP) for ethnic Koreans with foreign citizenship was adopted in 2007 to resolve the 2001 ruling by the Constitutional Court on a provision of the Overseas Koreans Act which calls for differential treatment of overseas ethnic Koreans. Policies specific to ethnic return migration and international migration in general are continuously evolving in Korea. While the policy directives still tend to emphasize economic d…
Overview of Trends and Policies on International Migration to East Asia: Comparing Japan, Taiwan and South Korea
This overview article examines the major similarities and differences among the three countries in East Asia — Japan, Taiwan and Korea — in terms of their immigration policies and observed flows as an introduction to three country-specific papers and a contribution on the simulation of economic impacts of different migration scenarios in Asia. These papers are from a two-year project, “From Origin to Destination: Policy Alternatives for Managing …
Development of Radiocarbon Dating Method for Degraded Bone Samples from Korean Archaeological Sites
The development of radiocarbon dating for degraded bone samples collected at Korean archaeological sites has been successful through the characterization of raw bone C/N ratios and application of an ultrafiltration method. It was found that the C/N ratios of raw bone samples are inversely proportional to the carbon content and residue amount after gelatinization. We have examined a few dozen Korean archaeological bone samples for this study. Well…
Risk Factors in the Rapidly Rising Incidence of Divorce in Korea
For just over a decade between 1990 and 2003, the crude divorce rate tripled from 1.1 to 3.5 in Korea. Using the combined data from two nationally representative surveys of women conducted in 1997 and 2002, this study examines the risk factors of divorce and attempts to provide insights into the rising divorce rate in Korea. The findings show that the period effects on the probability of divorce remain unexplained after taking into account severa…
Wild geese fathers' and a globalised family strategy for education in Korea
This article examines one interesting form of global householding practised among Korean middle-class families: transnational families split across oceans for the purpose of children's early education, called kirogi families. Based on statistical data and interviews with a small sample of kirogi fathers, this study describes the rapid growth in the numbers of Korean students going abroad for early English education and examines the main motivatio…

Children's support for elderly parents in urban and rural China: Results from a national survey
Intergenerational Financial Support among Whites, African Americans, and Latinos
Recent empirical research has found that interhousehold exchanges of goods and services are more frequent among Whites than among African Americans or Latinos. This study explores racial and ethnic differences in kin support and focuses on financial support that adult children receive from their parents. We decompose the observed group differences in the incidence of adult children's receiving assistance into those explained by behavioral pattern…
Married Women's Employment in Rapidly Industrializing Societies: Examples from East Asia
A variety of explanations have addressed the phenomenon of secular change in married women's employment in rapidly industrializing countries. These include theoretical frameworks that emphasize female labor supply, the conditions of labor demand, patriarchal values, the international division of labor, and the effects of exported industrialization. This article examines two societies (South Korea and Taiwan) that showed considerable similarity in…
Sons, Daughters, and Intergenerational Support in Taiwan
This study focuses on married children's financial support for their parents in Taiwan. It is often assumed that economic and social changes accompanying industrialization will drastically weaken parental power and thus reduce the support from adult children to parents. The data in this article, however, show that the vast majority of married children, both sons and daughters, provided net financial suppor for their parents during the previous ye…

Analyzing the effect of prenatal care on pregnancy outcome: A conditional approach
We used vital statistics data to examine the effect of the time of entry into prenatal care relative to the gestational age of delivery on pregnancy outcome. Early entry into prenatal care was associated with better outcomes only in women who delivered at 37 through 42 weeks of gestation. We are concerned that the evaluation of the effect of prenatal care using vital statistics data may be questionable because of the problems inherent in the data
Changes in the family status of elderly women in Korea
As a result of sharp declines in fertility and mortality, the aging of the Korean population has proceeded rapidly and is likely to continue in full force for some time. In societies such as Korea, where families traditionally have been the only efficient source of support for the elderly, an aging population poses a threat because families have fewer descendants available to care for increasing numbers of surviving elderly persons. The exact mag…
Implementation and Computational Issues for Combined Models of Location, Destination, Mode, and Route Choice
A unified approach to deriving models of urban location, destination, mode, and route choice is illustrated, and an algorithm based on Evans's approach and the Lagrange multiplier procedure is proposed. By examining derivatives of the Lagrangian function, we show that the Newton-Raphson technique can be implemented for finding the optimal Lagrange multipliers for these models. Procedures for identifying values of generalized cost-function coeffic…
