Λυσιμελης: Überlegungen zu existenzieller Körperlichkeit und literarischen Strategien von Homer bis Platon
The adjective λυσιμελής (“limb-loosening”) and related statements about bodies dissolving or melting are found in Greek literature in an astonishing variety of contexts, above all in relation to sleep, death and erotic desire. The present paper asks what made the idea of (limbs) loosening so attractive for authors and it traces their use from early Greek epic (Homer and Hesiod) through lyric (Archilochus, Alcman, Sappho, Ibycus, Anacreon and Pind…
Metaleptische Bilder des Erzählens: Von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart
Sicut Commentatores Loquuntur: Authorship and Commentaries on Poetry / Autorproblematik und antike Dichterexegese
Ancient commentaries on poetry - due to their heteronomous nature, their miscellaneous character, and the fact that most of them are transmitted in abridged and anonymous form - are usually not considered ‘authorial’ texts in the same way as poems or literary prose are. On the other hand, as didactic texts, they rely on authority to convey their interpretation, and they also often seem to have been perceived as products of authorial activity, as …
For the Most Part Serious: The Comic Potential of Authorial Metalepsis from Aristophanes to Lucian
Scholarship has drawn a contrast between modern uses of metalepsis (illogical transgressions of narrative levels), which are frequently assigned comic effects, and their ancient counterparts, which are deemed more serious. This article argues that in the case of authorial metalepsis, a way of expression presenting the narrator as bringing about the effects he describes, the comic potential was already discovered in antiquity. Case studies from Ar…
Was tut ein Geschichtsschreiber: Formen auktorialen Handelns in Lukian, De historia conscribenda
Lucian’s work De historia conscribenda not only presents reflections on how one should or should not write history, but also illustrates possible ways to represent the authorial activity of a historian (i. e. how one writes ‘metahistory’). In this, two basic forms can be distinguished, both of which can be understood from a narratological perspective as metalepses. In the first case, the historian is represented as the direct originator of the ac…
Pindar's Poetic “I” and the Muses: Metaphorical Role Characterization in Different Genres
This paper offers a fresh perspective on the representation of the Muse(s) in Pindar. Two recent studies addressing this issue have argued for a clear distinction between the epinikia and the cult songs. This paper aims to reassess this approach and to offer a different perspective on the problem, focusing on the metaphors applied to the relationship with the Muse(s). While the image as drawn by Kantzios and Maslov emerges as simplistic, some of …
A Man Completely Devoid of Falsehood: Creating Credibility in Gregory Nazianzen’s Autobiographical Poems
Gregory of Nazianzus is an important case study for the development of autobiography, not only because he is one of the first Christians to write extended autobiographical texts, but also because he does so in verse. This paper addresses two interwoven questions: which strategies does Gregory employ in his autobiographical poems in order to create credibility for his literary self, and which of the motifs that he uses are innovative or specific t…
Mantik, Rhetorik und Poetologie: Mögliche Subtexte in Lukians Dialog mit Hesiod
Lucian’s dialogue with Hesiod appears to be a straightforward dispute on a defined topic in which the poet rather awkwardly defends himself against a most legitimate charge and ends up being justly convicted by Lycinus. Upon closer investigation, however, one can detect several remarkable subtexts that make the dialogue a sophisticated pleasure for learned readers. This paper discusses three possible subtexts: mantic, rhetoric, and poetology. See…
