  • Climate, peace, and conflict—past and present

    Open Access•White, Dominik Collet et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 69

Concern has risen that current global warming and more frequent extreme events such as droughts and floods will increase conflict around the world. This concern has spurred both social science research on contemporary climate, peace, and conflict as well as research in the historical sciences on past climate, weather, warfare, and violence. This perspectives article compares these two fields of scholarship and examines how each may benefit the ot…

  • Exploring a Mallorca cave flooding during the Little Ice Age using nondestructive techniques on a stalagmite

Open Access•Mercè Cisneros, Isabel Cacho et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2024

This study focuses on characterizing a discontinuity within the Seán stalagmite (4.75–7.75 cm) by means of two nondestructive techniques: (1) high-resolution micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and (2) X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanning (XRFCS). Micro-CT was used to study the stalagmite density, and XRFCS was applied to obtain the qualitative elemental composition and colour measurements. The new data obtained from nondestructive techniques …

  • La climatología histórica en España. Estado de la cuestión de una especialidad ante los retos del siglo XXI

    Open Access•Mariano Barriendos•ARTICLE•Índice Histórico Español•2022

Historical climatology is a recently developed scientific specialization, which is currently in great need of a conceptual and methodological definition, as it faces research challenges in a work context and increasingly complex and ambitious objectives. This paper focuses on the development of this specialization within the Spanish scientific field, its background, current activity, and the specific challenges it is facing, from Spanish documenta…

  • Correlations between historical climate data and incidents of common bunt in Spanish wheat, 1755-1801

    Open Access•Fernando Martínez–Moreno, Ignacio Solís et al.•ARTICLE•Historia Agraria Revista de…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 2

From 1755 to 1801 in Spain, many articles and reports were written about common bunt, a seed-borne plague that was difficult to control at the time. The objective of the study is to better understand this plague and the relationship between historical rainfall indexes and years of higher reported outbreaks. We compared documentary sources on extreme rain events and annual series of wheat prices in four locations (Murcia, Seville, Toledo, and Zamo…

  • European summer temperatures since Roman times

    Open Access•Jürg Luterbacher, J Werner et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

The spatial context is criticalwhen assessing present-day climate anomalies, attributing them to potential forcings and making statements regarding their frequency and severity in a long-term perspective. Recent international initiatives have expanded the number of high-quality proxy-records and developed new statistical reconstruction methods. These advances allow more rigorous regional past temperature reconstructions and, in turn, the possibil…

  • Les variations climatiques dans la péninsule ibérique

    Mariano Barriendos•ARTICLE•Revue d’histoire moderne et…•2010•Cited by: 1

  • Climatic variations in the Iberian Peninsula during the late Maunder Minimum (AD 1675-1715)

    Open Access•Mariano Barriendos•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1997•Cited by: 9•References: 2

Historic documentation containing a record of rogation ceremonies carried out in response to environ mental factors allows an initial assessment of the pluviometric regime in the Iberian Peninsula during the late Maunder Minimum, climatically one of the most interesting periods of the 'Little Ice Age'. The data indicate an increase in precipitation with regional variation in its intensity related to the more frequent passage of low- pressure syst…
