  • An Acoustic-Phonetic Description of Hidatsa Vowels

    Open Access•J P Boyle, Jiaang Dong et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2024•References: 7

In this study, we report on results of a preliminary acoustic-phonetic analysis of the Hidatsa vowel system. We conducted acoustic measurements of Hidatsa vowels in terms of averaged temporal and spectral properties of these phones. Our durational analysis provides strong evidence that Hidatsa has a ten-vowel system with phonemically long and short vowels, in addition to two diphthongs. Our spectral measurements consisted of averages and time-evo…

  • Phonetic and phonological patterns of nasality in Lakota vowels

Open Access•Rebecca Scarborough, Georgia Zellou et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 25

Lakota (Siouan) has both contrastive and coarticulatory vowel nasality, and both nasal and oral vowels can occur before or after a nasal consonant. This study examines the timing and degree patterns of acoustic vowel nasality across contrastive and coarticulatory contexts in Lakota, based on data from six Lakota native speakers. There is clear evidence of both anticipatory and carryover nasal coarticulation across oral and nasal vowels, with a gr…
