How Does High-Speed Rail Promote Green Innovation in China: Empirical Analysis Based on Panel Data of 284 Cities
Utilizing the panel data of 284 cities from 2005 to 2019 in China, this paper employs the multi-period difference-in-differences model to explore the impacts of the opening of high-speed rail (HSR) on green innovation as well as the underlying mechanisms and heterogeneity in the impacts. The results show that the opening of HSR effectively promotes green innovation, and this finding remains robust after a series of robustness tests. The positive …

Using conditional inference to quantify interaction effects of socio-demographic covariates of US Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy
COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy has become a major issue in the U.S. as vaccine supply has outstripped demand and vaccination rates slow down. At least one recent global survey has sought to study the covariates of vaccine acceptance, but an inferential model that makes simultaneous use of several socio-demographic variables has been lacking. This study has two objectives. First, we quantify the associations between common socio-demographic variables …
Impacts of population aging on the quantity and quality of pharmaceutical innovation: Evidence from OECD countries
Against the backdrop of rapid population aging, we examine the impacts of population aging on pharmaceutical innovation based on the panel data of OECD countries between 1997 and 2018. We show that population aging effectively boosts the quantity and quality of pharmaceutical innovation before the share of older adults approaches 14%, the threshold for the aged society. Once the country enters the aged society, however, population aging is no lon…
Negative Life Events, Social Ties, and Depressive Symptoms for Older Adults in China
Although it is widely acknowledged that older adults who have gone through negative life events are more likely to develop depression, there is limited evidence on whether and which type of social ties moderate this perceived relationship. Based on 2016 and 2018 waves of Chinese Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (4,466 individuals, 8,932 observations), we apply linear fixed effects models and confirm that negative life events are associated with d…
Residents’ Support for Tourism Amidst the Covid-19 Era: An Application of Social Amplification of Risk Framework and Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Theory
Given that the concept of risk perception stems primarily from consumer behaviour, tourism research has tended to address the issue from tourists' perspective, resulting in a lack of consideration of destination residents' risk perception and its impact on their attitudes and subsequent behaviour. Based on the social amplification of risk framework (SARF) and the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) theory, this study constructed a theoretic…
Changing society, changing lives: Three decades of family change in China
China has witnessed drastic family changes amidst demographic and socioeconomic transitions unprecedented in its history. Using data from three censuses and a national survey, this paper provided a descriptive documentation about the changing patterns in household size and structures from a synthetic life course perspective. By 2010, people below the age of 5 and in their late 20 s and early 60 s were more likely to live in three‐generation house…
The mixed blessing of living together or close by: Parent-child relationship quality and life satisfaction of older adults in China
BACKGROUND: Geographic proximity between parents and children is increasingly recognized as an alternative measure to coresidence as a gauge for intergenerational support in China. The quality of intergenerational relationships is another important dimension of intergenerational ties that is often underexplored. OBJECTIVE: We examine the association between parent-child proximity and life satisfaction of older adults and how it interacts with the…
Government policy and global fertility change: A reappraisal
The role of government policy in fertility change has been a central inquiry in understanding global demographic changes in the last half century. We return to this inquiry with longitudinal data for over 150 countries from 1976 to 2013 and use fixed-effects models to address common methodological concerns. Our results reveal that while government anti-natalist policies fail to show clear effects for all countries included, they are associated wi…
The impacts of parental migration on children’s subjective well-being in rural china: A double-edged sword
The emerging problem of left-behind children has attracted mounting academic and policy attention. Prior studies primarily cast light on left-behind children’s education, health, and behavior, while their subjective well-being is much less understood yet. Based on a nationally representative sample of rural children aged 10–15 in 2014, we examine the impacts of different types of parental migration on children’s subjective well-being and how thes…

A Benevolent State Against an Unjust Society? Inequalities in Public Transfers in China
Against the backdrop of a rapid increase in inequality following China’s historical economic boom, the Chinese government in the past decade has drastically expanded its social welfare programs aimed in part to reduce inequality. How effective has the benevolent state been and what does it inform us about the nature of the new welfare system in China? Utilizing the National Transfer Accounts approach, we examine inequalities in public transfers i…
Coresidence with elderly parents and female labor supply in China
The female labor force participation rate in China has experienced a significant decline over the past two decades. Existing studies attribute this decline to the retreat of government protection of female employment and growing gender discrimination in th
The Impact of Health Insurance on Health Outcomes and Spending of the Elderly: Evidence from China's New Cooperative Medical Scheme
This paper investigates the effects of China's New Cooperative Medical Scheme (NCMS) on health outcomes and healthcare expenditure of the elderly in rural China, using panel data from the 2005 and 2008 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. We employ a strategy that combines propensity score matching with a difference‐in‐differences approach to address selection bias. Results show that the NCMS has significantly improved the …
Direct and indirect effects of childhood conditions on survival and health among male and female elderly in China
The association between resilience and survival among Chinese elderly
Based on the unique longitudinal data of the elderly aged 65+ with a sufficiently large sub-sample of the oldest-old aged 85+ from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, we construct a resilience scale with 7 indicators for the Chinese elderly, based on the framework of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Cox proportional hazards regression model estimates show that, after controlling for socio-demographic characteristics and initia…
