  • Let’s Have Some New Clichés

    Open Access•Felix Christian Thiesen•ARTICLE•Empirical Musicology Review•2026

German Schlager music has often been criticized as an inferior product of the culture industry. The genre’s distinctly conservative and narrow-minded image contrasts with its broad audience in one of the world’s largest music markets. In this study, a content analysis of 548 songs from 2009 to 2019 was performed to investigate topics and trends in Schlager music with regard to social diversity. Open Access•Felix Christian Thiesen•ARTICLE•Popular Music•2023•References: 11

These studies provide strong evidence that a wide range of intra- and extramusical information can be identified ab…

Felix Christian Thiesen, Reinhard Kopiez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2020

In an online study, N = 517 participants rated 48 very short musical stimuli comprised of well-known pop songs with regard to arrangement parameters and cross-modal variables. Identification rates for songs and artists ranged between 0-7%. We observed associations between increasing stimulus durations as well as structural sections (chorus or verse) and detection rates. Analyses of the cross-modal variables revealed a main factor, representing th…
