    Open Access•Harry Perlstadt•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2020

Howard Waitzkin and his co-authors argue that it is better to trust civil servants and governments with our health than capitalist managers and corporations, since the former can be held more publicly accountable and the latter cannot. They look askance at public-private partnerships, non-governmental organizations, and foundations that receive tax deductible contributions. Individual practitioners may be certified as more than adequately trained and exp…

Thucydides account of the plague (430-426 BCE) and the subsequent rise of the cult of Asclepius can be examined as perhaps the earliest case study of collective behavior and a social movement. In his account of the plague, Thucydides reveals a sociological imagination and c…

This article examines the sexist work experiences of a sample of women lawyers in a mediumsized midwestern city. Specifically, it focuses on reports of discrimination, gender disparagement, and sexual harassment as components of gendered systems that maintain and reinforce inequalities between men and women on the job. The study of goals in organizations has theorized about, but not examined, how organizational structure may affect goal attainment. In this study we examine the relationship between product goals and outcome in terms of internship placements for 78 American medical schools. When variables such as hospital affiliation or student ability intervene in the goal-outcome relationship, we claim that the schools can manipulate them for goal attainment. T…
