Motivators and Barriers for Green Physical Activity in the U.S
This study explored differences in motivations and barriers for green physical activity (GPA) in a sample of U.S. adults (N = 205). Differences by identity (i.e. gender, sexual identity, disability status, and race/ethnicity) were examined. Participants (33.5 ± 9.2 years, 76.6% female and 7.8% genderqueer/non-conforming, 33.3% LGBTQIA+, 34.1% BIPOC, 10.7% individuals with disabilities) responded to survey measures for motivations/barriers and cou…
Weight-related Self-monitoring App Use Among Emerging Adults is Cross-sectionally Associated With Amount and Type of Physical Activity and Screen Time
Weight-related self-monitoring (WRSM) apps are often used by emerging adults to assist in behavior change. However, little is known about the relationship between WRSM among the general population of emerging adults and various physical activity and screen time behaviors. This paper examines associations between WRSM app use and various forms of physical activity and screen time among a population-based sample of emerging adults. Data come from E…
Exploring Associations of Household Chaos and Child Health Behaviors in Rural Families
Objectives: Regular physical activity (PA) and limited sedentary behavior (SB) and screen-time are essential for children's health, and rural children are more likely to have overweight and obesity. Household chaos (HHchaos), defined as disorganization characterized by noise and crowding, is associated with negative behavioral outcomes in children. In this study, we examined associations between HHchaos and PA, SB, and screen-time among rural chi…
Positive Outliers Among African American Women and the Factors Associated with Long-Term Physical Activity Maintenance
Socio-Cultural and Environmental Factors that Influence Weight-Related Behaviors
African-American girls experience higher rates of obesity than other youth and are more likely to live in environments that may inhibit healthy lifestyles. Focus groups with African-American girls (14.2 ± 2.36 years) and their mothers were conducted to explore socio-cultural and physical factors within the home, neighborhood, and school environments that influence physical activity (PA) and food choices (i.e., availability and accessibility). Bei…

Investigating Issues of Environmental Injustice in Neighborhoods Surrounding Parks
Parks are important resources for facilitating community health. Using an environmental justice framework, this study in Kansas City, Missouri examined disparities by income and race/ ethnicity for bordering land uses, densities of incivilities (e.g., vandalism, litter), unhealthy retail establishments in neighborhoods surrounding parks. Low and medium income and high minority park neighborhoods were more likely to be surrounded by higher densiti…
Health Status, Health Insurance, and Health Care Utilization Patterns of Immigrant Black Men
Objectives. This study sought to describe the health status, health insurance, and health care utilization patterns of the growing population of immigrant Black men. Methods. We used data from the 1997–2000 National Health Interview Survey to examine and then compare health variables of foreign-born Black men with those of US-born Black and White men. Logistic regression analyses were used to examine health outcomes. Results. Foreign-born Black m…
