Contextualizing the statistical training for the mathematics teacher from the perspective of the documentational approach to didactics
Initial training is a transition time for the future teacher, since it is when the metamorphoses which transform the person’s status from student to teacher take place. Therefore, analyzing this profile is essential to offer cognitive experiences that allow the structuring of teaching resources for future professional experiences. In this context, this paper analyzes the genesis of the statistics teaching documents of a future mathematics teacher…
Municipal solid waste generation in Norway
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generation is a considerable issue in terms of environmental pollution and is inextricably linked to household consumption. To identify potential decoupling of economic activity and waste, studies have tested the Waste Kuznets Curve (WKC) hypothesis, investigating factors that increase or decrease the MSW per capita generation across and within countries. We analyze a panel data set of 344 municipalities in Norway betw…
Development of a Mathematics Vocabulary Test
The aim of this study was to develop the Mathematics Vocabulary Test (MVT)-an instrument to identify young children with a limited mathematics vocabulary-in a multilingual majority country-South Africa. This study consists of two substudies with children aged 3-8.5 years ( N = 988, n girls = 429). In Study 1, a 26-item MVT was developed by multiprofessional expert panels and piloted in four languages, isiZulu ( n = 229), Sesotho ( n = 83), Englis…
Neural correlates of fraction magnitude processing in high and low achieving primary school children in South Africa
Fractions are one of the most challenging concepts in primary school mathematics. While there are many behavioural studies on fraction calculation in primary school children, our understanding of the underlying neural mechanisms remains limited. This knowledge will help shed light on learning variability among children. Furthermore, few neuroimaging studies on fraction calculation have been conducted in Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, an…
Challenges of teaching isiZulu reading in the early grades
The present study was conducted at a time when South African educational researchers and practitioners have become increasingly concerned about the state of the reading competence of the country's primary school learners.Another concern that also drove this study was the teaching practices of foundation phase teachers, specifically regarding the current 'science of reading' (SoR).In a cross-sectional study of Grades 1-3 learners and their teacher…
Towards embedded academic language development in a teacher education programme
This study explored contextual factors of student teachers’ weak academic language (AL) performance in a pre-service teacher education programme at a university in Namibia. The aim was to capture their experience in the BEd programme in which English as a second language is the medium of instruction. In interviews with the students (n = 15) and their lecturers (n = 6), as well as analyses of curriculum- and policy documents and students’ writing …
Domains and origins of information and knowledge encountered by pre-service teachers during professional experiences in Helsinki and Johannesburg
This article reports the results of a study on the domains and origins of information and knowledge that primary pre-service teachers utilised during their professional experiences in teaching schools at the University of Helsinki (UH) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ). The professional experience at both universities focuses on the collaborative planning of lessons in a variety of school subjects. These programs also emphasise the importan…
Detection of unauthorized consumption in water supply systems
This study proposes characterizing unauthorized water consumption and fitting multiple logistic regression models for detecting illegal connections. The research used monthly water consumption data from 42,131 single-family homes in Joinville, southern Brazil. The obtained models achieved accuracies ranging from 83% to 100% for detecting three types of fraud (unauthorized reconnection of a disconnected water service line, bypass, and direct conne…
Assessment of water consumption in households using statistical analysis and regression trees
Factors influencing water consumption in public schools in Southern Brazil
An early numeracy intervention for first-graders at risk for mathematical learning difficulties
The aim of this study was to investigate whether early numeracy skills of South African first graders who are at-risk for mathematical learning difficulties can be improved with an intervention program. The participants were 267 children from 17 classrooms in the greater Johannesburg area. In this quasi-experimental small group intervention study (15 sessions over 5 weeks) the outcome measure was early numeracy skills. Based on pretest early nume…
Service learning and the practice of social justice and care
The values of a social justice pedagogy in teacher education are assumed to be firmly established in South African higher education. This article discusses how serviced learning (SL) can provide practical experience of caring and serve the promotion of the ideals of social justice in two initial teacher education programmes. However, an analysis of data in this case study shows that, although SL practice has served as a platform for social justic…
Pre-school children’s bridge to symbolic knowledge
The authors present the theoretical groundwork for a research project on learning and cognitive development of number concepts in the early years of childhood. Giving a background sketch of the genesis of a learning and cognition lab at a university in the metropolitan heartland of South Africa, they present their initial literature framework for inquiries into children’s symbolic learning of number in the pre-school years. They argue that concep…
When all the school became a stage
This article gives an ethnographic glimpse of how an urban South African school mirrored a community’s sense‐making during times of rapid social change. The glimpse is extracted largely from an ethnography that was composed in 2000. In this study of school life, the biennial play was central to the year’s activities. In the play the tone, content and style reflected a performance of the discourse of the school community – a discourse of fear and …

Western Dakota Winter Counts
The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries witnessed the movement of the Western Dakota across the Missouri River and onto the High Plains. Concomitant with this movement were increasing White trade, contact with Whites and other Indian groups, and the impact of disease. The existence of several Western Dakota winter counts provides unique documentation of these groups’ own records of this critical period of change. This paper examines th…
