Why some elected autocrats fail: Democratic vulnerability in Latin America
The literature on democratic backsliding offers conflicting assessments of democratic vulnerability. A central source of this disagreement is the failure to distinguish between illiberal rhetoric and illiberal attempts, on the one hand, and democratic erosion and democratic breakdown, on the other. Building on this distinction, we argue that democratic vulnerability to illiberal actions by elected leaders depends primarily on two factors: the inh…

Chondromyxoid Fibroma: A Case Report
Chondromyxoid fibroma is a rare benign bone tumor in the craniofacial region, and tends to affect the mandible more than the maxilla. It is extremely important to know the characteristics of this entity and carry out a correct diagnosis and treatment. This article aims to report a case of chondromyxoid fibroma involving the maxilla and nasal cavity. This is a 35-year-old man who presented to the hospital with an increase in volume in the palate. …
In court we trust? Political affinity and citizen's attitudes toward court's decisions
This article investigates the role of citizen political affinities in shaping attitudes towards judicial decisions in corruption cases involving politicians. Although emerging research suggests that decisions regarding a high‐ranking politician can reduce general citizen trust in courts, there is no systematic evidence examining how political affinities differentially affect confidence in court decisions depending on the accused politician. We co…
Why Didn't Brazilian Democracy Die
Brazil, for many scholars and pundits, showcased the risk of democratic breakdown with the election of a far-right populist like Jair Bolsonaro. Against pessimistic expectations, however, not only has Brazilian democracy survived but politics has returned to business as usual. What can explain this supposedly unanticipated outcome? This article provides an analytical assessment of this this puzzle and offers an alternative explanation. We argue t…
Congruent We Govern: Cost of Governance in Multiparty Presidentialism
The received wisdom on executive–legislative relations in multiparty presidential systems is that the size of the president's majority in Congress is the key factor explaining governance patterns, particularly the president's legislative success. However, in many cases presidents enjoying a nominal majority have been unable to pass legislation and have faced institutional instability. The article departs from a conventional definition of divided …
Tactical Performance of Talented Youth Soccer Players (Rendimiento táctico de jóvenes jugadores de fútbol con talento)
The evaluation of talented soccer players has been based, traditionally, on physical capacities through technical-tactical tests. However, in the last years, soccer academies are focused their evaluations on technical-tactical and physical capacities, as well. Given that, the purpose of this work has been twofold: 1) to examine the evolution of the tactical performance of a group of talented players previously selected; 2) to compare the tactical…
Fear of death and polarization: Political consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic

How Valuable Is a Presidential Cabinet? Measuring Ministries' Political Attractiveness in Brazil
How valuable is a cabinet position? While the current literature does not ignore the reality that ministries differ from one another, it does not offer either theoretical or methodological procedures to assess such differences. This article introduces a refined measure of coalescence degree that considers several characteristics ministries may have, as well as politicians' preferences about cabinet appointments. We estimate the effect of this alt…
Why do voters choose corrupt candidates? The role of ideology on cognitive mechanisms
There is evidence that people vote for corrupt candidates even when they have information that their representatives have been engaged in corruption in the past. Based on a survey experiment in Brazil, we find evidence that ideology is an important factor to explain this voting behavior. We also found evidence of two psychological mechanisms that explain this effect: a change in perception of corruption and a cognitive cost-benefit evaluation. Th…
Political interference and regulatory resilience in Brazil
Governments face a fundamental tradeoff between regulatory independence and control. Attempts of interference have the effect of reducing the system's level of commitment and credibility. On the other hand, an administration runs the risk that the autonomy delegated to regulators might be used to pursue outcomes that may harm their interests. This tradeoff is particularly relevant when there is an alternation of power with the arrival of a new po…
The Evolution of Theories about the Brazilian Multiparty Presidential System
In recent years, four approaches about executive-legislative relations in Brazil have emerged: i) the perspective that points out limitations and constraints of multiparty presidential systems; ii) the building of government coalitions; iii) coalition management; and iv) the role played by institutions including the prerogatives of party leadership inside the House. In this paper, we review the literature on these approaches, offering a guide for…
Should I Stay or Should I Go?” Explaining Political Ambition by Electoral Success in Brazil
Why run for reelection when the logic and incentives of the political system leave no doubt that running for other offices is a better option? This paper focuses on the factors that influence both the choice of career and the electoral success of those who run for reelection and those who attempt to obtain other offices, using Brazil as a case study, a typically fragmented, multiparty environment with a strong executive. We argue that legislators…
Hybrid Political Institutions and Governability: The Budgetary Process in Brazil
In this paper we take a close look at some of the particular pathways by which majoritarian and consensual institutions affect governability. We demonstrate that the mix of majoritarian and consensual institutions found within a country can influence these pathways quite dramatically, such that they produce rather different consequences for governability, even when these pathways are relatively similar in nature. Particularly, we focus on the rul…
Credibility and the design of regulatory agencies in Brazil
In this paper we model the process of regulatory agency design, focusing on the role of credibility. The government is constrained in the sense that it must create regulatory institutions that allow it to commit to not administratively expropriate investors. The model explains both the preference of the agency head chosen by the government as well as the optimal level of statutory control. We argue that in Brazil this trade-off between credibilit…
A simple demonstration of numerical dispersion under FDTD [for EM field calculations]
The method of finite differences in the time domain (FDTD) has become of growing importance for solving electromagnetic problems due to its simplicity, versatility and the available of inexpensive and powerful computers. In this work, the authors try to demonstrate in an understandable way the characteristic of numerical dispersion of the algorithm. For this purpose, they simulate the one-dimensional propagation of different wave shapes under FDT…
