Open Access•A Montoya, Rupert Knox•ARTICLE•Nuevo mundo mundos nuevos•2026

  • Mapping Out Juridified Conflicts over Mining: The Legal Cultures of the Subsoil Database

    Open Access•A Montoya, Rupert Knox•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2025•References: 26

Indigenous peoples, rural and peasant populations, and Afro-descendants have increasingly disputed mining and other extractive ventures in the territories they inhabit in various regions of Latin America. This article introduces an open-access digital and bilingual curated repository of data that compiles legal and legal-like actions by various actors in the context of paradigmatic conflicts over mining in Central America and Mexico. It situates …

  • Troubling environmental governance: Citizen legal experiments with transboundary commons

    Open Access•A Montoya•ARTICLE•Oxford Development Studies•2024

Environmental phenomena shed light on the fiction that inter-state borders constitute on some level, and the limitations of state-based environmental governance. Transboundary watersheds, in particular, flow across borders of different kinds, evincing the interdependence of water bodies, both human and nonhuman. The lack of cross-border comprehensive environmental governance imposes regional forms of inequity and inefficient forms of water protec…

  • Citizens as lawmakers: Legal innovation and the competing moralities of environmental juridification

    Open Access•A Montoya•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2024•Cited by: 1

Law has increasingly become a relevant political language and a field of political contestation for citizens. In the context of socioenvironmental disputes, citizens have appealed to the courts or become involved in lawmaking as means of asserting their rights and worldviews. Such citizen engagements with law, I argue, amount to a form of worldmaking, as they allow for the introduction of situated moral values that challenge existing notions, roo…

  • Recurrent Plasmodium vivax Cases of Both Short and Long Latency Increased with Transmission Intensity and Were Distributed Year-Round in the Most Affected Municipalities of the RACCN, Nicaragua, 2013–…

Open Access•Aida Soto, Aida M Soto et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The characteristics of P. vivax recurrent episodes were examined using a centralized secondary source of malaria records in Nicaragua and in the two most affected municipalities in the RACCN. The study of 36,787 malaria cases due to P. vivax or P. falciparum revealed that, nationwide, 3624 patients had at least one recurrent infection. This was achieved by matching names, gender, age, community/municipality, ethnicity, etc. P. vivax was responsib…

  • Post-extractive juridification: Undoing the legal foundations of mining in El Salvador

    Open Access•A Montoya•ARTICLE•Geoforum•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 15

In 2017 El Salvador passed the world’s first and only blanket ban on metal mining. This article explores this unique exception to the neoextractive path followed by much of Latin America since the early 2000s—an exception brought about by citizen-led lawmaking processes. Drawing from fieldwork research in El Salvador, I suggest that the ban was enabled not so much by a negative assessment of extraction-led development as by multiple other factors…

  • On Care for Our Common Home: Ecological Materiality and Sovereignty over the Lempa Transboundary Watershed

    Open Access•A Montoya•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American Studies•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 17

For over a decade, Salvadorean grassroots movements and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) pursued legal innovations with the aim of protecting their water sources from potentially polluting industrial activities such as mining. They initially drafted bans on mining that would preclude the extractive-based development path embraced by neighbouring countries. Eventually, they scaled up their approach and devised a draft proposal for a transboun…

  • On politics and precarity in academia

    Open Access•David Loher, Strasser et al.•ARTICLE•Social Anthropology•2019•Cited by: 11•References: 10

The terror of the neoliberal markets and the terror of politics both threaten academic freedom - sometimes subtly, sometimes more openly. In this Forum, we ask our contributors to reflect on the entanglements between economy and politics and how they contribute to the ongoing precaritisation in academia, how they shape individual researchers' biographies and how they influence academic research. But more importantly, beyond analysis, this Forum a…

    Open Access•Marta Pérez, A Montoya•ARTICLE•Disparidades. Revista de…•2018•Cited by: 13•References: 6

    Open Access•A Montoya•ARTICLE•ECA Estudios Centroamericanos•2018

  • The Value of Open Access in Anthropology and Beyond

Open Access•Grégory Dallemagne, Víctor Del Arco et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropology in Action•2015

This commentary seeks to engage the issue of 'impact' in social anthropology by scrutinising the topic of open access. Drawing on the discussions that took place at the international conference 'FAQs about Open Access: The Political Economy of Knowledge in Anthropology and Beyond', held in October 2014 in Madrid, we suggest that addressing the topic of open access allows a two-fold goal. On one hand, it elucidates that public debates about open a…

  • The Turn of the Offended

    Open Access•A Montoya•ARTICLE•Social Analysis•2015

This article explores how the affective dynamics involved in elections and routine politics might inform us about the conditions of possibility of specific political imaginaries. It builds upon research conducted during and after El Salvador's 2009 presidential election. Passions ran high among Salvadorans on both the left and the right that electoral season, as allusions to wartime elicited unsettled divisions and offenses. For many left-wing an…
