  • Menopause

    Open Access•Ann V Bell, A Friedman•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2026

Menopause affects millions of individuals and is a sociologically compelling topic, cross-cutting the subfields of medicine, gender, body, family, and work. Yet to date, little sociological research examines the process. Indeed, menopause is the least studied female reproductive event among pregnancy, childbirth, and menstruation. Thus, in this article, we review the existing social scientific research on menopause in an effort to expose what rem…

  • Effects of stochastic resonance on reflexive and perceptual outcomes in chronic ankle instability

Open Access•A Friedman, Leif P Madsen•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2025

Introduction Abnormal lower-limb cutaneous reflex characteristics following stimulation during gait have been observed among those with chronic ankle instability (CAI), which have been linked to perceptions of instability. These outcomes have the potential to serve as biomarkers of CAI or functional measures of sensorimotor recovery following lateral ankle sprain or clinical rehabilitation. However, no studies, to date, have identified a targeted…

  • Motivations for Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Testing

    Open Access•A Friedman, Tammy L Anderson•ARTICLE•Qualitative Sociology•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 33

Direct-to-consumer genetic testing (DTCGT) has the potential to significantly impact racial and ethnic identities as well as social concepts of race and ethnicity. Prior literature challenges the binary choice of essentialism vs. constructionism in understanding consumers' interpretations of genetic ancestry results. Largely focusing on differences by race and ethnicity, this research finds that test takers selectively apply genetically determini…

  • Misophonia matters

    Open Access•Victor W Pérez, A Friedman•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2024•Referencias: 53

Misophonia has gained attention in scientific circles that utilise brain imaging to validate diagnoses. The condition is promoted as not merely a symptom of other psychiatric diagnoses but as a discrete clinical entity. We illustrate the social construction of the diagnostic category of misophonia through examining prominent claims in research studies that use brain imaging to substantiate the diagnosis. We show that brain images are insufficient…

  • Metrics, Money, and Managerialism

Shawna Vican, A Friedman et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Higher Education•2019•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 36

Higher education faces a conflict between the traditional logic of professionalism and an increasingly prominent corporate logic. Using interviews with 30 faculty at a single institution, we seek to understand the consequences of these competing logics. Across our interviews, faculty express a misalignment between their professional values and the corporate logic applied by administrators. This incompatibility contributes to faculty dissatisfacti…

  • “There are Two People at Work That I'm Fairly Certain are Black”

    Open Access•A Friedman•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•2016

Geneticists, biologists, social scientists, and humanist scholars have powerfully critiqued race as a stable set of biological categories. Despite this, in everyday life, race is consistently assumed to be visually available in physical features. Racial categories also continue to be used in scientific and social scientific research as if they were self-evident and real. In this study, I examine the role of visual perception in the construction o…

  • Lessons Learned Designing and Using an Online Discussion Forum for Care Coordinators in Primary Care

    Open Access•Jeanne M Ferrante, A Friedman et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2016

While an increasing number of researchers are using online discussion forums for qualitative research, few authors have documented their experiences and lessons learned to demonstrate this method’s viability and validity in health services research. We comprehensively describe our experiences, from start to finish, of designing and using an asynchronous online discussion forum for collecting and analyzing information elicited from care coordinato…

  • A Typology of Primary Care Workforce Innovations in the United States Since 2000

    A Friedman, Karissa A Hahn et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2014•Referencias: 45

PURPOSE: Innovative workforce models are being developed and implemented to meet the changing demands of primary care. A literature review was conducted to construct a typology of workforce models used by primary care practices. METHODS: Ovid Medline, CINAHL, and PsycInfo were used to identify published descriptions of the primary care workforce that deviated from what would be expected in the typical practice in the year 2000. Expert consultants…

In 1970 Anne Koedt published her influential article, “The Myth of the Vaginal Orgasm,” disputing medical experts’ insistence on the vagina as the privileged site of female sexuality and asserting that “the recognition of clitoral orgasm as fact would threaten the heterosexual institution” (Notes from the Second Year, 1970, pp. 37–41. Emphasis in original.). Now Carolyn Herbst Lewis has provided a stimulating analysis of the ways medical authorit…
