  • Historical management of equine resources in France from the Iron Age to the Modern Period: A Cross Disciplinary Approach

Open Access•Pierre Clavel, Jean Dumoncel et al.•ARTICLE•Cahiers du Centre de recherches…•2022

Donkeys, horses and their mule hybrids have had a far-reaching impact on human history since they have been domesticated several millennia ago. These animals have indeed provided many economic, social and cultural resources that fueled both agricultural and economic development, war making and cultural exchange. Gaining a full understanding of the respective contributions of the different equine species to past societies remains, however, difficu…

  • The origins and spread of domestic horses from the Western Eurasian steppes

Open Access•Pablo Librado, Naveed Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2021

Domestication of horses fundamentally transformed long-range mobility and warfare 1 . However, modern domesticated breeds do not descend from the earliest domestic horse lineage associated with archaeological evidence of bridling, milking and corralling 2–4 at Botai, Central Asia around 3500 bc 3 . Other longstanding candidate regions for horse domestication, such as Iberia 5 and Anatolia 6 , have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic,…

  • The Abri Casserole (Dordogne, France): Reassessing the 14 C Chronology of a Key Upper Paleolithic Sequence in Southwestern France

    Open Access•Sylvain Ducasse, Jean-Marc Pétillon et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 39

Discovered at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Abri Casserole (Dordogne, France) was the subject of salvage excavations in the early nineties. The fieldwork revealed a sequence of 13 archaeological levels that document human occupations from the Gravettian to the Magdalenian, including very rare and poorly known assemblages (e.g. Early Badegoulian, Protosolutrean) that afford a particular importance to this sequence. Results of a previ…

Le Petit Cloup Barrat cave (Cabrerets, Lot, France) is located on the hill of Pech Merle, 800 metres from the famous Palaeolithic art cave. It opens onto the edge of a collapsed doline of 500 m2. Since 2003, the different excavations (by Castel and Chauvière, then by Castel) have revealed an important Upper Palaeolithic stratigraphy, with several archaeological assemblages. More than ten millennia have been recorded discontinuously in the various…

    Open Access•Jean Philip Brugal, Olivier Bignon-Lau et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2014

  • Millennial-scale change in archaeofaunas and their implications for Mousterian lithic variability in southwest France

    Open Access•Eugène Morin, Anne Delagnes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2014•Cited by: 19•References: 96

Located on the same hillside as Pech Merle, 800 metres from the entrance of that famous decorated cave, the site of Petit Cloup Barrat opens onto the edge of a small doline. Though partially excavated at the beginning of the 20th century, this site has never been published. A test pit in 2003 was followed by excavations at the entrance of the cave in 2004 and 2005. The stratigraphic sequence, whose base is still unknown, yielded abundant lithic a…
