Fostering Harassment-Free Geography Departments: Proactive Strategies for Departments and Their Leaders
Museum/space/discourse: Analyzing discourse in three dimensions in Denver's History Colorado Center
Museums have recently gained attention from cultural geographers as important sites of cultural production and reproduction. Within this growing field of 'museum geographies', we focus on how discourses are arranged in the three-dimensional spaces of galleries and exhibits. We argue that the spatial arrangement of text, media, and artifacts shape narrative storylines and suggest sequences, connections, progressions, and pathways within and betwee…
Rethinking the PhD in geography: Overview and introduction
Creating a community of support for graduate students and early career academics
This paper focuses on strategies for enhancing the preparation of geographers moving into academic careers. Based on research and experience gained from the Geography Faculty Development Alliance and Enhancing Departments and Graduate Education in geography projects, several suggestions for improved practice are detailed. These move beyond self-help models and argue for a systematic, community-based approach to professional development. Reasons f…
Hungary after 1989: Inscribing a New Past on Place
Since the fall of the Communist government in 1989, Hungary's political monuments and historical shrines have undergone great change. Although popular attention focused on the removal of overtly political monuments, new shrines were also created, and forgotten memorials were restored. In a departure from earlier political eras, decisions about contested places are issuing from local authorities and private citizens, rather than from the central g…

Foreign-born Scholars in US Universities: Issues, Concerns, and Strategies
This symposium focuses on foreign-born geographers pursuing careers in US colleges and universities. Though foreign-born scholars make up a significant portion of the US geography professoriate, little is known about their experiences, the cultural problems and legal issues they confront in the US, and policy and institutional changes that might be implemented to support them. These papers address some of these challenges—particularly in American…

Concerns, Attitudes, and Abilities of Early-Career Geography Faculty
Professional experiences during graduate school through the first few years of an academic appointment shape patterns of work and social behavior that prefigure the long-term success of new faculty members, including prospects for tenure and promotion. We explore these experiences through interviews and surveys with a sample of early-career faculty in postsecondary American geography. Our analysis reveals that teaching is the primary source of an…

Shadowed Ground: America’s Landscapes of Violence and Tragedy
Shadowed Ground explores how and why Americans have memorialized—or not—the sites of tragic and violent events spanning three centuries of history and every region of the country. For this revised edition, Kenneth Foote has written a new concluding chapter that looks at the evolving responses to recent acts of violence and terror, including the destruction of the Branch Davidian compound at Waco, Texas, the Oklahoma City bombing, the Columbine Hi…

The Courthouse Square in Texas
With its dignified courthouse set among shade trees and lawns dotted with monuments to prominent citizens and fallen veterans, the courthouse square remains the civic center in a majority of the county seats of Texas. Yet the squares themselves vary in form and layout, reflecting the different town-planning traditions that settlers brought from Europe, Mexico, and the United States. In fact, one way to trace settlement patterns and ethnic dispers…
Cultivating Student Research and Study Skills in Web-based Learning Environments
The use of Web-based learning environments involves cultivating new types of study and research skills among students. Students must be able to find authoritative sources efficiently, evaluate the quality of documents thoroughly, and use and cite materials properly. Students may also need guidance in what constitutes appropriate conduct in respect of the Internet and Web. They need to understand the difference between citing a source and plagiari…

Relics of old London: Photographs of a changing Victorian City
The Victorian era was a period of tremendous growth and change. The cities of the era, as precursors of today's, have attracted much attention because they seem capable of .deepening understanding of the dynamics of urban social and morphological change.1 Study of these cities also lends insight into Victorian society's perceptions and responses to rapid change, attitudes which were held in tension between excitement about progress and alarm over…

Velocities of Change of a Built Environment, 1880–1980 Evidence From the Photoarchives of Austin, Texas
Velocity of change is introduced as a measure of the dynamism of the built environment relevant to the relationship of cultural process and built form. Whereas previous studies have addressed, implicitly, velocity of change for particular urban processes, this paper attempts to develop methods for evaluating broad sections of the built environment based on the transcription and comparison of photographs available from archival and contemporary co…
