Invecchiare fuori dalla coppia: Abitare futuri im/possibili
The article reports the results of a participatory research conducted with women facing mature and elderly age while living outside of a couple (aged 55-80 years), aiming to highlight the specificity of their experiences, needs, and imaginaries, also in relation to their cohort characteristics. Building on the contributions of queer perspectives on caregiving relationships, intimacy, support, and the development of new perspectives on representat…
The Sage Handbook of Global Sexualities
The domain of sexualities has occupied the imaginary of the forbidden and the unspoken since early times. Taboo became an umbrella category to describe things best left unspoken, hidden behind closed doors or buried in the most intimate secret thoughts and desires. For decades and still today, medical doctors and spiritual leaders remain the guardians of that which we dare not speak. This book is about sexualities and it emerges at a time when th…
Putting Families of Origin into the Queer Picture: Introducing This Special Issue
n\t\t\t\t\tIn undertaking our own separate research projects and in our crosscontinental comparative analyses of those projects, we became aware of the gaps between the richness of research on GLBT lives, including experiences of intimacy and parenthood, and the paucity of research on their relations with their families of origin. Still marginal is, in particular, research on the perspectives of the families of origin themselves: parents, but als…
Suffering As the Path to Acceptance: Parents of Gay and Lesbian Young People Negotiating Catholicism in Italy
This article investigates the experiences of parents of gay men and lesbians (GL) as they negotiate the influential Catholic discourse on homosexuality in Italy, and their Catholic belonging and practice. The analysis is based upon in-depth interviews with 46 parents of gay and lesbian people. We explore how parents who are heavily involved in the religious community negotiate their role within it, but also how, more generally, parents frame thei…
Citizenship across generations: Struggles Around Heteronormativities
This article argues for the importance of attention to intergenerational relations in understanding the conditions for access to citizenship rights and recognition for non-heterosexual people. The case of Italy, where individual entitlements and responsibilities are largely structured around intergenerational dependence, underlines the salience of intergenerational relations in relation to sexual citizenship. Drawing on a study of the families of…
Introduction: The politics of sexuality in contemporary Italy
Sex is always political. But there are historical periods in which sexuality is more sharply contested and more overtly politicized. In such periods, the domain of erotic life is, in effect, renegotiated. (Rubin 1999, 143)
Italians (should) do it better? Medicalisation and the disempowering of intimacy
Recent years have witnessed new processes of visibilisation of adult heterosexual men's sexuality in the public arena in Italy, culminating in discussions on sexual scandals. The authors explore here one of these processes: the current mediatisation of a medicalised male sexuality, which appears as a more socially legitimate and scientifically grounded new discourse on masculinity. By analysing recent social campaigns on male sexual health, it wi…
Coming to be a Man: Pleasure in the Construction of Italian Men's (Hetero)Sexuality
Little research has challenged a naturalized conception of male (hetero) sexuality by looking at the multiple ways in which heterosexual men experience and make sense of sexuality in their everyday lives. In this article, after outlining the forms that such a conception has taken in recent Italian history, we explore how men and women deal with the issue of male pleasure. The analysis is based on interviews with seventy-one Italian men and women …
Beyond the sex machine? Sexual practices and masculinity in adult men's heterosexual accounts
The processes of reproduction and change of adult masculinities through everyday sexual practices remain largely invisible to research. Our attempt is to shed light upon these processes by investigating middle-aged Italian men's accounts of their heterosexual, sexual biographies on the basis of 36 in-depth interviews. These cohorts of men have experienced structural transformations in gender relations and changes in the cultural scenarios regardi…
Constructing a women's perspective on the European Union: The Danish debate
Gender has largely been a hidden dimension in the Danish political debate about the European Community and Union. Yet, attempts have been made to construct a specific women's perspective, and to make space for it in the public debate. Focusing on the first four referendum campaigns held on the EC/ EU issue, the article describes the recurring features of these attempts and their changes in time. The more difficult bases for the definition of a co…
