The ethnographic turn in regenerative studies
Purpose This study aims to establish that (1) an ethnographic turn in researching regenerative practices and processes is underway and (2) in engaging with regenerative practices and processes, ethnography itself is undergoing a regenerative turn. Design/methodology/approach To demonstrate how the paradigm shift toward regenerative practices across fields may translate into an equally regenerative approach in ethnographic research, this article d…
The public legitimacy of elite athletes’ political activism
Athletes have again started to take a visible stance on various political and social issues, which has stirred fierce controversies. Existing research has a strong US bias, and, to extend the range of research, we conducted a German survey on the perceived legitimacy of athletes’ political activism. The evidence suggests that the US debate cannot simply be transferred to other political and cultural contexts. The German respondents did not genera…
Public support for athlete activism in Germany
Professional athletes increasingly use their popularity to speak out about political topics off and on the field. However, only few studies explore how audiences react to political speech in elite sports. Existing research has tended to focus on very few high-profile cases, usually in the United States, such as Colin Kaepernick's anthem protest. Going beyond single cases, this paper investigates factors that systematically influence public suppor…
Media Presentations of Olympic Victories and Nation-Related Identification Among Viewers
This study uses experimental methods to assess the causal effect of media presentations on viewer’s emotions, national identification, and nation-related values. In three experiments covering marginal sports disciplines, viewers watched broadcasts of compatriots winning an Olympic gold medal, either featuring emotional and partisan reporting styles or a neutral audio commentary. Findings show that those exposed to the partisan commentary experien…
Imagining the nation through football
Previous research has shown that consuming media broadcasts of national athletes participating in international sporting competitions can inspire national pride and heighten identification with the nation. Extending these accounts, this paper asks whether major sporting events can also shape meanings attached to the nation; specifically how strongly certain traits and characteristics are associated with the collective. Since prior research shows …
Sport and exercise in times of self-quarantine
Due to the massive spread of a new Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), many European governments enacted rules and legislations in order to reduce social interactions and contain the spread of the virus. German authorities put in force a lockdown of all non-essential infrastructure, starting on 22 March 2020. These policies included the closing of sports clubs, fitness centres and community sports grounds. Most federal states prohibited social gatherings o…

For club and country?’ The impact of the international game on US soccer supporters from the 1994 World Cup to the present
While compared with the big four professional sports in the United States, soccer remains a marginalized spectator sport; yet it has gained a sizable following over the past two decades. TV audiences and stadium attendance for domestic club matches are growing and supporters’ groups that follow the professional sides have emerged and established themselves. Rather than being introduced to the game as fans of their local clubs, however, many passi…
Masculinities/Men's Studies
Men's studies, also commonly referred to as masculinity studies or critical studies of men and masculinity, is an interdisciplinary field, under the broader auspices of gender studies, which is concerned with the social, historical, cultural, and psychological construction of masculinities.
Major Sporting Events and National Identification
Research suggests that major sporting events can affect identification with the nation-state. Complementing previous research, it is argued in this article that identification with the national in-group should be enhanced especially among emotionally involved spectators. Emotional involvement, however, can be induced by the sport itself but also by an emotionalized framing of the events by the media. Two studies are presented which test these cla…
