The New Menippean Satire
In recent years numerous writers and film directors have chosen to redeploy the age-old genre of satire. While timeless human flaws and foibles continue to be its target, contemporary satire also grapples with new concerns. In “Colono:scopy” (2020a) Karen Tei Yamashita resorts to the satirical genre, as she also does, in collaboration with Ronaldo Lopes de Oliveira, in “Manifesto Anthrobscene” (2021), in order to both capture and lambast the ongo…
The Repentant Devil’s Advocate
[Abstract] Gradual environmental violence, what Rob Nixon calls “slow violence,” poses obvious representational challenges for filmmakers due to its agential and temporal dispersion. In sharp contrast to the direct filmic appeal of “fast” violence, slow violence is not readily visible to the camera. That is why film directors trying to narrate slow violence need to rethink their cinematic strategies and, on some occasions, create new ones. This e…
“Junk You Can't Abandon”
In the last decades a concern with waste has started to “surface” not just in the economic and social sciences, but also in the humanities, where it has lately clustered around Waste Studies and Waste Theory. This critical approach allows us to grapple with the consequences of our globalized economy of waste for both the planet and human beings. Although Waste Theory can be applied to virtually any literary tradition, I would argue that Asian Ame…
The waste of the empire
This article interrogates the politics of “waste” in both the environmental and the socio-economic senses of the word, with a special attention to the outsourcing of toxicity and the “wastification” of disposable, residual bodies. Both toxic discourse, as explored by Lawrence Buell and Cynthia Deitering, and environmental justice, in particular Rob Nixon’s elucidation of the representational challenges posed by slow violence, contribute to a spec…
The Junkyard in the Jungle
In this new millennium the relatively young field of ecocriticism has had to face important transdisciplinary, transnational, and transnatural challenges. This article attempts to demonstrate how two of the major changes that environmental criticism is currently undergoing, the transnational turn and the transnatural challenge, have both been encoded in Through the Arc of the Rain Forest (1990), the first novel published by Karen Tei Yamashita. I…
