Investigating the palaeoenvironmental context of Late Pleistocene human dispersals into Southeast Asia: A review of stable isotope applications
We review palaeoenvironmental applications of stable isotope analysis to Late Pleistocene archaeological sites across Southeast Asia (SEA), a region critical to understanding the evolution of Homo sapiens and other co-existing Late Pleistocene (124–11.7 ka) hominins. Stable isotope techniques applied to archaeological deposits offer the potential to develop robust palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, to contextualise the occupational and non-occu…
A continental perspective on the timing of environmental change during the last glacial stage in Australia
The timing and duration of the coldest period in the last glacial stage, often referred to as the last glacial maximum (LGM), has been observed to vary spatially and temporally. In Australia, this period is characterised by colder, and in some places more arid, climates than today. We applied Monte-Carlo change point analysis to all available continuous proxy records covering this period, primarily pollen records, from across Australia (n = 37) t…
Seasonality and the isotope hydrology of Lochnagar, a Scottish mountain lake: Implications for palaeoclimate research
The relationship between isotope ratios in precipitation and lake waters was monitored by bi-weekly measurements taken over a five and a half year period between May 2000 and September 2005 (a period of 1964 days) at Lochnagar, a remote mountain lake in eastern Scotland. Short-term changes in the oxygen isotope composition of lake water (δ 18 O L ) at Lochnagar follow a seasonal pattern similar to isotopes in local precipitation (δ 18 O P ), howe…
