  • No estamos todas, faltan las presas! Contemporary Feminist Practices Building Paths toward Prison Abolition

    Open Access•Susana Draper•ARTICLE•CLCWeb Comparative Literature and…•2020

This article focuses on a small but crucial aspect of the question of gendered violence and the multiple injustices that feminist mobilizations have once again brought into mainstream discussion: how do we find ways out of women’s imprisonment and stop the abusive violence that permeates institutional and domestic spheres without relying on those same forms of violence as a solution to the problems we face? This is a question that comes from a lo…

  • Strike as Process

    Susana Draper, Liz Mason-Deese•ARTICLE•South Atlantic Quarterly•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This article approaches the March 8 women’s strike as a kaleidoscope displaying the complexity of the rupture among different “feminisms.” Within this complex rupture, the figure of the strike, understood as an action, question, and process, was essential, as it turned into a space for a multiplicity of struggles and acts of meaning-making. In this space, the call for an international women’s strike effectuated a series of moves: rupture with res…

  • Cartographies of affects

    Susana Draper•CHAPTER•Historical Geographies of Prisons•2015

In a context of expanding carceral nation states, significant government investments are made to erect new jails and prisons. On occasion, older sites of confinement and infliction of pain are decommissioned. Many debates ensue about the preservation of such sites. Little existing literature has examined how decommissioned jails and prisons are re-purposed through a process we refer to as “carceral retasking.” Based on a five-year qualitative stu…

  • Against depolitization: Prison-museums, escape memories, and the place of rights

    Open Access•Susana Draper•ARTICLE•Memory Studies•2014•Cited by: 1

This essay compares postdictatorial transformations of former spaces of confinement for political prisoners into shopping malls, such as the Buen Pastor prison in Córdoba (Argentina) and the Punta Carretas prison in Montevideo (Uruguay). It places these within the context of past and current debates on the human rights of “common prisoners,” as distinct from those of “political ones.” Yet precisely the omission of the political is mirrored at the…

  • Within the Horizon of an Actuality: The State and the Commons in the Eternal Return of Communism

    Susana Draper•ARTICLE•South Atlantic Quarterly•2014•References: 1

This essay connects Jodi Dean's and Bruno Bosteels's works on the "horizon" and the "actuality" of communism with some of the problems that constituted the political landscape during the past decade in Bolivia and in the past years (2011-13) of Occupy Wall Street. It proposes that the old issues that composed the problematic of dual power in the Latin America of the seventies are transposed into the present in the guise of the question regarding …

  • Afterlives of Confinement: Spatial Transitions in Postdictatorship Latin America

    Susana Draper•BOOK•Afterlives of confinement•2012

During the age of dictatorships, Latin American prisons became a symbol for the vanquishing of political opponents, many of whom were never seen again. In the postdictatorship era of the 1990s, a number of these prisons were repurposed into shopping malls, museums, and memorials. Susana Draper uses the phenomenon of the opening of prisons and detention centers to begin a dialog on conceptualizations of democracy and freedom in post-dictatorship L…
