Neolithic, Copper, and Bronze Age woodland composition and exploitation in the Great Hungarian Plain, East‐Central Europe
In the prehistoric communities of the Great Hungarian Plain (GHP), the exploitation of forest steppe and floodplain woodlands started at ∼6000 cal BC. So far, only scattered and irregular wood charcoal analyses have been performed on Holocene archaeological sites, therefore the species composition of the GHP woodlands is known mainly from pollen records. This study aims to fill this gap by systematic sampling and analysis of key Early, Middle and…
Holocene land cover change in the Pannonian (East-Central Europe) forest steppe
Pollen analytical studies of Holocene lake and mire sediments provide valuable information on past forest cover changes and help us resolving the long-debated origin of temperate forest steppes in Europe. In this paper we contribute to this debate via the pollen and multi-proxy palaeoecological (macrofossil, charcoal, major and trace element) analyses of a paleolake (Kokad Mire) situated in the temperate deciduous forest steppe zone of the Great …
A special find assemblage from the Neolithic of the Tisza region and its latest archaeological and archaeometric analysis
The settlement of Tiszaigar lies some 10 km south of Tiszafüred in the northern Hungarian Plain in eastern Hungary. A site known as Tiszaigar-Homokbánya extends over a roughly 250 × 150 m large area about 500 m south of the village, to the north of the entrance to the Arboretum, on the high bluff overlooking the floodplain and a former curved channel of the Tisza to the west. A large, abandoned quarry pit with a diameter of 100 m, whose depth rea…
An Iconic Late Neolithic Tell on the Hungarian Plain
It often happens that the fresh investigation of well-known sites using newly developed techniques and their reassessment brings the recognition that some of the assertions believed to be timelessly true turn out to have been strongly mistaken or were misinterpretations. This has been the case with many of the renowned Late Neolithic tell settlements dated to the earlier fifth millennium BC on the Alföld (Great Hungarian Plain). The collation of …
Egy ikonikus késő neolitikus tell-település az Alföldön
Előfordul, hogy régóta jól ismert lelőhelyek új módszerekkel végzett mai kutatása és újraértékelése közben néhány örök érvényűnek gondolt tézisről kiderül, hogy pusztán tévedés, félreértelmezés. A híres alföldi, az 5. évezred első felére keltezett késő újkőkori tell-településekkel sok esetben szintén ez történik. Az utóbbi években a múlt századi ásatási adatok mellett mind roncsolásmentes vizsgálatok, mind pedig új feltárások eredményeinek összeh…
Tiszazugi mikroregionális régészeti topográfiai kutatások
Absztrakt A Tiszazugi Mikroregionális Kutatási Program 2023-ban indult a Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum – Nemzeti Régészeti Intézetében, hogy visszatérve a klasszikus terepbejárás-alapú topográfiához, elemezze a hosszú távú településhálózati változásokat a neolitikumtól a kora újkorig. A program első évében a terepbejárási módszertan, leletfeldolgozási keretrendszerek, adatelemzés és adatmegjelenítés kérdéseinek újragondolását és optimalizálását tűztük ki…
On the 'pseudo-ditch' system of the Late Neolithic Öcsöd-Kováshalom settlement complex on the Great Hungarian Plain
The well-known Late Neolithic tell-like settlement of Öcsöd-Kováshalom on the Great Hungarian Plain gained a completely new context when a triple enclosure consisting of segments (hence the name 'pseudo-ditch') was discovered in 2018. Followed by two small excavation campaigns, this paper gives account of the construction stages, various digging and filling actions, of the chronology and of the structured deposits that marked the closing event of…
Test excavation of the “pseudo-ditch” system of the Late Neolithic settlement complex at Öcsöd-Kováshalom on the Great Hungarian Plain
In 2018, the RGK’s research team led by Knut Rassmann undertook the magnetometer survey of the Late Neolithic site of Öcsöd-Kováshalom over a roughly 65 ha large area. An enclosure system of three concentric semi-circular ditches was detected around the tell-like mound that formed the core of the settlement. In order to resolve these issues, we organised a small field school excavation with the support of the RGK and with the participation of the…
Patterns of social practices and activities in the early ALPC settlement of Bükkábrány-Bánya VII (Northeast-Hungary)
Bükkábrány-Bánya VII, an early ALPC settlement in Northeast Hungary, was just recently exposed to international research, but we would like to illustrate in our study how much promise its archaeological material has. We focused our investigation on these finds because the site contains a three-hectare excavated area and a welldefined settlement structure. Our first results are based on a quantitative examination of the many categories of archaeol…

Öcsöd-Kováshalom. Potscape of a Late Neolithic site in the Tisza region
The primary goal of the present study is the publication of the ceramic inventory from Öcsöd-Kováshalom, for which Dissertationes Archaeologicae, being an online journal, can provide the necessary space. We shall principally focus on the possible correlations between vessel forms and their decoration in our analysis, alongside the examination of other traits and dimensions. The ad hoc nature of the analysed finds, i.e. an assemblage of vessels th…
A szociális folyamatok színterei Polgár-Csőszhalom késő neolitikus településének összefüggéseiben
A felső-Tisza-vidéki Polgár-szigeten a késő neolitikumban kialakult településhálózatot vizsgáljuk a jelen tanulmány keretein belül. Ehhez kapcsolódóan Polgár-Csőszhalom környezetében végzett, több évig tartó geomágneses munkák eredményét mutatjuk be. Ez alapján a Csőszhalom és a körülötte található horizontális település együttesen 67,5 hektár nagyságúnak határozható meg

Preliminary report on the field surveys and excavations in the vicinity of Berettyóújfalu
The staff of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences at the Eötvös Loránd University carried out rescue excavationsprior to the construction of the M4 motorway in Hajdú-Bihar County in 2015. Within the frames of this project theopportunity was given to unearth approximately 5 hectares of a multi-period site east of the city of Berettyóújfalu. Before this excavation systematic field surveys had been carried out on the same site in a 24 hectares la…
A Palaeolithic mammoth bone deposit and a Late Copper Age Baden settlement and enclosure. Preliminary report on the rescue excavation at Szurdokpüspöki – Hosszú-dűlő II–III. (M21 site No. 6–7)
The Institute of Archaeological Sciences of the Eötvös Loránd University carried out a rescue excavation at the Szurdokpüspöki – Hosszú-dűlő II-III. site, where Palaeolithic, Late Copper Age, Early Bronze Age and Roman Age features were found. This preliminary report concentrates on the Palaeolithic pit where mammoth bones were deposited and on the special features of the Late Copper Age settlement
