Examining Contending Explanatory Models of Nuclear Proliferation: Theoretical and Policy Implications
This study examines major theoretical models that seek to explain states’ pursuit of nuclear weapons programmes and decisions to abandon them. A comparative historical analysis of multiple case studies suggests that the traditional ‘security’ model cannot be supplanted by Scott Sagan’s challenger alternatives – the ‘domestic political’ and ‘norms’ models. While political dynamics and normative pressures play a significant role in nuclear policyma…
Big wheels keep on turning: Some diagnostic phenomena within knapped stone tools of the Hungarian Neolithic
Research into the Neolithic period in Hungary (between 6000 and 4600 or 4500 BCE) began at the turning of the 19th and 20th century, and the cultural frameworks that we use today were coined relatively early. In the last hundred years, Hungarian prehistoric research has done much to delineate these cultures' spatial and temporal boundaries. On this basis, the territory of present-day Hungary can be divided into two major regions - one in the west…
A special find assemblage from the Neolithic of the Tisza region and its latest archaeological and archaeometric analysis
The settlement of Tiszaigar lies some 10 km south of Tiszafüred in the northern Hungarian Plain in eastern Hungary. A site known as Tiszaigar-Homokbánya extends over a roughly 250 × 150 m large area about 500 m south of the village, to the north of the entrance to the Arboretum, on the high bluff overlooking the floodplain and a former curved channel of the Tisza to the west. A large, abandoned quarry pit with a diameter of 100 m, whose depth rea…
How to Address the Saudi Nuclear Program? An Israeli Dilemma
Normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia is part of a three‐way negotiation that would allow the United States to prevent further erosion of its regional standing and to contain Iran. However, Israeli politicians and security experts object to the potential deal's allowing a Saudi route to military nuclear capabilities. They criticize the Netanyahu government for failing to require conditioning US‐Saudi nuclear cooperation on th…
Chronological problems of the 7th–10th-century AD Carpathian Basin in light of radiocarbon data
The study presents the evaluation of a radiocarbon series, currently unparalleled in the research of the early medieval Carpathian Basin, which comprises data from the 7th to the 10th century AD. We provide a data set that, when combined with the radiocarbon data available in the related literature, covers the period in focus. The results of its analysis can be considered novel in several respects: 1) the radiocarbon data sequence and the relativ…
Obsidian-tipped Spears from the Admiralty Islands in the Oceania Collection of the Museum of Ethnography in Budapest
The authors studied 36 obsidian-tipped spears in the Oceania collection of the Museum of Ethnography in Budapest. In addition to describing the objects from the Admiralty Islands collected before 1897, the paper provides a summary of the related ethnographic information, including the technological and technical details of spear point making and the characterisation of the obsidian raw material used. The blades used for making the obsidian points …

The Vámoscsalád-Kavicsbánya Site (Vas County): Preliminary Results of the Evaluation of the Lithic Assemblage
The archaeological artefacts of the Vámoscsalád-Kavicsbánya site were discovered, collected and preserved by István Marton and his brother, András Marton, mineral collectors from Mesterháza, in about 2015. The slight elevation on a terrace of the Répce River was mined for the M86 highway in 2012–2013. Apart from knapped stone tools, the main subject of our paper, several polished serpentinite and greenschist tools have been recovered from the sit…
A nemzetközi kutatásban viszont a technikai viselkedés rekonstruálása került a középpontba. A paleoetnológiai szemlélet felhasználásával komplexen vizsgálható az őskori embercsoportok viselkedése a nyersa…
On the 'pseudo-ditch' system of the Late Neolithic Öcsöd-Kováshalom settlement complex on the Great Hungarian Plain
The well-known Late Neolithic tell-like settlement of Öcsöd-Kováshalom on the Great Hungarian Plain gained a completely new context when a triple enclosure consisting of segments (hence the name 'pseudo-ditch') was discovered in 2018. Followed by two small excavation campaigns, this paper gives account of the construction stages, various digging and filling actions, of the chronology and of the structured deposits that marked the closing event of…
From bedrock to alluvium: Considerations on human-lithic resource interaction
Although lithic raw material provenience studies in Hungarian archaeology have started in the late 1970s, little attention has been paid to the methods prehistoric people with which acquired these raw materials for tool production. With our palaeoethnological approach, we investigate the relationship between human groups and the world surrounding them, aiming to recognize which environmental factors played a role in their lithic raw material econ…
Dietary and cultural differences between neighbouring communities: A case study on the early medieval Carpathian Basin (Avar and post-Avar period, 7th–9th/10th centuries AD)
Stable isotope (δ15N, δ13C) and 14C results from two early medieval cemeteries are presented and evaluated in this study in order to draw conclusions about diet, social differentiation and chronology in the Carpathian Basin during the Avar period (7th–9th century CE). At Tiszafüred and Hortobágy, two contemporaneous but distinct groups buried their deceased. The results reflect basic diet deviations between the two communities, which originated i…
Some remarks on a German chipped stone lithic assemblage of uncertain origin in the collection of the Institue of Archaeological Sciences, Eötvös Loránd University
András Marton has recently come into the possession of a small, chipped stone assemblage from the legacy of a German amateur mineral collector from Hamburg. Unfortunately, very little is known about the deceased and his collection. A part of the finds, including tools, was donated to the Institute of Archaeology of the Eötvös Loránd University. The lithic assemblage contains a total of 27 chipped stone artefacts made exclusively of Baltic flint. …
Palaeolithic and Mesolithic assemblages from Tunisia
With the following short review, we would like to remember our departed German friend and archaeologist Peter Nierling. He conducted several field trips in North Africa, Algeria, Lybia, and Tunisia, and on two occasions, in 1997 and 1998, one of us (A. P.) accompanied him. During these travels, field surveys were carried out mainly in the region of Gafsa. In the wider vicinity of the classical Paleolithic/Mesolithic sites of El Mekta (de Gafsa) a…
Prehistoric Stone Raw Materials from the Bükk Mountains in Northeastern Hungary
From the period of the Neanderthals to those of the Late Neolithic populations, the Bükk Mountains region played an important part in the lives of various prehistoric societies, and the varied geological history of this territory provided distinct circumstances for the production of stone implements. The major goal of our research is to outline the current state of information concerning the prehistoric use of the diverse silicified source materi…
Creating Histories: Different Perspectives, Controversial Narratives at Rákóczifalva, an Early Copper Age Site on the Great Hungarian Plain
A Copper Age settlement and cemetery was fully excavated at Rákóczifalva-Bivaly-tó Site 1/C in 2005-2007, making it possible to compare the use of its material culture in closely related, coeval, but different archaeological contexts. Such a rare set of circumstances allows the authors to highlight methodological issues associated with the distorting effect of archaeological finds made on sites where only settlement or burial data are available, …
Chipped stone assemblages from Schleswig-Holstein (North Germany) in the collection of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences – Elte Eötvös Loránd University
Attila Péntek recently acquired a large amount of chipped stone artefacts from the legacy of his departed friend Peter Nierling († 2017), archaeologist and field researcher in Hamburg. The aim of bequeathing the finds was to support the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic research in Hungary. The beneficiary catalogued the finds according to the sites and together with the necessary documentation handed them over to the Institute of Archeology of the Eöt…
Patterns of social practices and activities in the early ALPC settlement of Bükkábrány-Bánya VII (Northeast-Hungary)
Bükkábrány-Bánya VII, an early ALPC settlement in Northeast Hungary, was just recently exposed to international research, but we would like to illustrate in our study how much promise its archaeological material has. We focused our investigation on these finds because the site contains a three-hectare excavated area and a welldefined settlement structure. Our first results are based on a quantitative examination of the many categories of archaeol…
The North Korean Card in Us-China Relations: How Should It Be Played
For two decades, successive US administrations have overplayed the importance of pressure tactics and Chinese support for denuclearizing North Korea. However, the continued development of North Korea's nuclear and missile programs reflects not only gridlock in US-North Korea relations, but also Pyongyang's growing suspicions over China's commitment to the Kim regime. By supporting and enforcing tougher sanctions, Beijing has only reinforced North…
The knapped stone assemblage from Boldogkőváralja in the light of a new statistical evaluation
One of the most famous knapped stone assemblages, the 566 intact blades found in a large vessel at Boldogkvralja-Tekeres-patak, dated to the Bkk culture (5200-5000 BC) has been at the forefront of the research for decades. Our intention was three-fold when we decided to reevaluate this find. First, with the publication of the conjoining workshop material, we wanted to draw more attention to the whole assemblage and not just only to the depot. Sec…

Hogyan deríthetők fel régészeti módszerekkel rituális cselekvések nyomai? Esszénk első részében a rituálé fogalmi meghatározásának nehézségeivel foglalkozunk. Amellett érvelünk, hogy alapvetően a kutató által kialakított kategóriáról van szó, ezért a „rituális cselekvés” azonosításának a régészeti emlékanyagban nincs egységes, minden esetben alkalmazható kritériumrendszere. A „cselekvés” fizikai lenyomatai azonban vizsgálhatók egységes szempontok…
Preliminary report on the excavation at Andornaktálya-Marinka in 2018
Andornaktálya-Marinka is among the several Palaeolithic archaeological sites in the region of Eger, on the foothills of the Bükk Mountains, North-Eastern Hungary. It is situated on the top of a 234 m high elevation located between the villages Andornaktálya and Ostoros. The site was discovered in 2014 by Ferenc Cserpák. Surface collections yielded by several field surveys show two kinds of archaeological material: one is signified mostly by a bif…
Theory into practice: Basic connections and stylistic affiliations of the Late Neolithic settlement at Pusztataskony-Ledence 1
Despite being positioned in the western fringes of the Tisza culture’s occupation area, the Late Neolithic settlement at Pusztataskony-Ledence 1 is seemingly well separated from the communities of the Lengyel complex. The character of its archaeological record however, together with recent results in the research of connections between the two cultural complexes raises the possibility of an amalgamation of these traditions at some point. In 2016,…

Houses, Households, Activity Zones in the Post-LBK World. Results of the Raw Material Analysis of the Chipped Stone Tools at Polgár- Csőszhalom, Northeast Hungary
In the last few decades, archaeological research has invested more energy into better understanding of past societies than ever before. There are several different factors that have made these changes possible. The development of non-destructive investigating techniques has made it possible to choose more precisely where to collect new data. Furthermore, advances in information technologies and the natural sciences have provided new tools to anal…
Report on the excavation at Páli-Dombok in 2015
Recently discovered traces of a settlement dated to the Epipaleolithic-Mesolithic period in Páli-Dombok site would shednew light on the questions of human contacts between the inner territories of the Carpathian Basin and Central Europe. The circumstances of the exploration and the excavation method were both subjects of previous papers, therefore here wewould like to focus only on the field works conducted in 2015
The first in situ Old Stone Age assemblage from the Rába Valley, Northwestern Hungary
Due to the construction of the M86 motorway, intensive quarrying activity started at several locations of the Rába Valley in Northwestern Hungary. This undertaking provided the discovery of a new archaeological site near the village of Páli in August 2014. During the rescue excavation, a rich lithic assemblage was unearthed, suggesting a human occupation related to the Epipalaeolithic–Early Mesolithic period. It is the first in situ site precedin…
Egy különleges kút és leletei Polgár-Csőszhalom késő neolitikus településéről
Most of the 68 wells uncovered on the single-layer horizontal settlement lying adjacent to the tell at Polgár-Csőszhalom did not contain any unusual finds. A few wells, however, yielded remarkable assemblages that can be interpreted as intentional, structured depositions. One of these was Feature 272, a well lying some 80–90 m from the one-time water shore, which contained a remarkably high number of vessels, most of which were lavishly ornamente…

New Perspectives on the Problems of the Exploitation Area and the Prehistoric Use of the Buda Hornstone in Hungary
The mountainous areas of the Carpathian basin have provided a wide spectrum of siliceous rocks for prehistoric people. Although the presence of outcrops of a kind of chert, named Buda hornstone was already known by geological and petrographic investigations, the developing Hungarian petroarchaeological research did not pay much attention to this raw material. Its archaeological perspectives have been opened by a discovery made at the Denevér stre…
