Role of Hostile and Benevolent Sexism in Shaping Prejudice Against Working Women in the United States and Pakistan
This study aimed to examine cultural differences between the United States and Pakistan on prejudice against working women, including employment skepticism and traditional role preference. Another purpose of the study was to assess how social dominance orientation (SDO), hostile sexism, and benevolent sexism explain the prejudice against working women. This study collected data online from a sample of 289 working women including N = 152 from the …
Acculturative Stress and Sociocultural Adaptation of International Students in the United States
Research has shown that acculturative stress and social support are important factors for sociocultural adaptation. To assess whether these phenomena extend to international students, the purpose of the current study was to examine the role of acculturative stress and social support on the sociocultural adaptation of international students who are enrolled in higher education institutions in the United States. The current study further examined t…
Seals of Kommerkiarioi of the Ros’
This article addresses the seals of the kommerkiarioi of the Ros’. So far there are known two groups of the seals in question. The first includes five specimens showing the flowering patriarchal cross on two steps on the obverse and the Greek inscription “ of the kommerkiarioi of the Ros’” on the reverse. The find-spots of most specimens are known: one artefact was discovered in Rybinsk at the Rus’ian settlement of Ust’-Sheksna, and three at the …
Cimmerian” bridles from a barrow near Slobozia (Lower Dniester Region)
A new study of the burial inventory from the early nomadic (“Cimmerian”) burial 3 barrow 3 Slobozia from the Lower Dniester region (the western flank of the “Great Steppe Belt”) allowed us to clarify the number of elements of bridle and its decoration found in the burial by category of finds. The analysis revealed that the burial contained details of at least five sets of bridles; for some of them were used round in section belts and for the othe…
Task measuring implicit attractiveness as a function of skin tone and facial features: A failed replication
In two studies, participants completed an implicit attractiveness task with faces as primes varying on (a) facial features from Afrocentric to Eurocentric and (b) skin tone from dark to light, and target pictures of environmental scenes varying in attractiveness. On each trial, participants were briefly primed with a face. Next, they categorized a target picture as either attractive or unattractive as quickly as possible. In addition, in Study 2,…
What Drives Racial Attitudes in Elementary School Children: Skin Tone, Facial Physiognomy, or Both
This work examines whether racial attitudes-when measured by both explicit and implicit measures- are driven primarily by skin tone, facial physiognomy, or both in 5 to 12-year-old children. Participants evaluated faces varying in skin tone (from dark to light) and facial physiognomy (from Afrocentric to Eurocentric). In an explicit task, children rated how much they liked each face. In an implicit task, participants completed a child-friendly ve…

The Effect of Group Polarization on Opposition to Donald Trump
Using focus groups, we examined support and opposition for Donald Trump prior to the 2016 presidential election. When ingroup members participate in discussion, this conversation alone typically strengthens and intensifies members’ initial attitudes. We used a pre‐ to post‐focus‐group questionnaire to assess attitudes toward Trump, his campaign, and policies. We argue that group polarization influenced people’s opinions about Trump such that atti…

Black American College Students Report Higher Memory of Love for Mothers in Childhood Than White Students
Cultural differences between Black and White individuals in the South are connected to the inequitable history of the United States. We wondered if these cultural differences would translate to a particularly precious aspect of life: memories of love felt in childhood toward one's parents. Some past studies have shown that Whites score higher on parental attachment measures to parents than Blacks, while other studies show no significant differenc…
Effects of Exposure to Alcohol-Related Cues on Racial Prejudice
Prior research ( Stepanova, Bartholow, Saults, & Friedman, 2012 ) indicates that exposure to alcohol-related cues increases expressions of racial biases. This study investigated whether such effects can be replicated with other tasks assessing racial bias and whether they stem from stereotyping or prejudice. In two experiments participants (N 1 = 118; N 2 = 152) were exposed to either alcohol-related or neutral advertisements, and then completed …
Effects of exposure to alcohol‐related cues on racial discrimination
Prior research has shown that exposure to alcohol‐related images exacerbates expression of implicit racial biases, and that brief exposure to alcohol‐related words increases aggressive responses. However, the potential for alcohol cue exposure to elicit differential aggression against a Black (outgroup) relative to a White (ingroup) target—that is, racial discrimination—has never been investigated. Here, we found that White participants ( N = 92)…
The role of feature-based discrimination in driving health disparities among Black Americans
Objective: A growing body of research finds that darker skin tone is often associated with poorer physical and mental health in Blacks. However, the psychosocial mechanisms underlying the skin tone-health link remain elusive. The present study seeks to address this knowledge gap by investigating the direct and indirect (through perceived discrimination, socioeconomic status, and self-esteem) effects of skin tone on self-reported physical and ment…
Attractiveness as a Function of Skin Tone and Facial Features: Evidence from Categorization Studies
Participants rated the attractiveness and racial typicality of male faces varying in their facial features from Afrocentric to Eurocentric and in skin tone from dark to light in two experiments. Experiment 1 provided evidence that facial features and skin tone have an interactive effect on perceptions of attractiveness and mixed-race faces are perceived as more attractive than single-race faces. Experiment 2 further confirmed that faces with medi…
Now One Is Russian, Now One Is Not: Ethnic Attitudes and Categorization Effects in the Russian Federation
We studied implicit and explicit ethnic attitudes and ethnic evaluations in Russia, where ethnic prejudice and violence are on the rise. Undergraduate sociology students ( N = 54) judged 100 faces, varying in facial physiognomy (Eurocentric to Afrocentric) and skin tone (light to dark), and completed implicit and explicit ethnic attitude measures. Participants used skin tone when evaluating faces as Russian or non-Russian, and relied on facial ph…
