  • Maritime crossroads

Open Access•Mónica Bolufer Peruga, Mónica Bolufer et al.•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•2023

This article explores the biographies of two gentlewomen, María de Betancourt (1758–1824) and Joana de Vigo (1779–1855), who lived respectively in Tenerife and Menorca, two crucial nodes in the scientific, commercial and military global networks of the late eighteenth century. Some of their scientific and literary contributions are mapped, paying particular attention to how they became active in contemporaneous learned networks. It is argued that…

  • A Latin American Casanova? Sex, Gender, Enlightenment and Revolution in the Life and Writings of Francisco de Miranda (1750–1816)

    Open Access•Mónica Bolufer Peruga•ARTICLE•Gender & History•2021•References: 2

This paper looks from a gender perspective at the elusive figure, complex personality and myth of Francisco de Miranda, enlightened traveller and Precursor of Latin American independence. By analysing Miranda's personal archive as his own carefully crafted creation, it pursues three closely connected issues insufficiently interpreted in historical perspective: the forms of masculinity he embodied and those from which he distanced himself, his con…

"The Routledge Companion to the Hispanic Enlightenment is an interdisciplinary volume that brings together an international team of contributors to provide a unique transnational overview of the Hispanic Enlightenment, integrating both Spain and Latin America. Challenging the usual conceptions of the Enlightenment in Spain and Latin America as mere stepsisters to Enlightenments in other countries, the Companion explores the existence of a distinc…

    Open Access•Mónica Bolufer Peruga•ARTICLE•Hispania Sacra•2019•References: 11

  • Orientalizing Southern Europe

    Mónica Bolufer Peruga, Mónica Bolufer•ARTICLE•The Eighteenth century/ The…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 1

This essay explores the role that eighteenth-century travellers assigned to Spain in the imaginary geography of European civilization, looking at the origins of the Romantic orientalizing stereotypes. If the full incorporation of Spain within the geographical and imaginary frontiers of the European world was still quite evident, and its imperial role acknowledged, its symbolic conversion (among other South-European countries, but even more so) in…

This article summarizes the main lines of thought of Anne-Thérèse Marguenat, marquise de Lambert (1647-1733), and delves into the echo that her work had in Spain, unveiling some scarcely known episodes and shedding light on the context in which the Spanish version of her essays was finally written and published, as well as on the intellectual profile and social circumstances of the translator, Cayetana de la Cerda y Vera, Countess of Lalaing (175…

  • Civilizar las costumbres

Mónica Bolufer Peruga•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Spanish Studies•2014

    Open Access•Mónica Bolufer Peruga•ARTICLE•Studia Historica Historia Moderna•2014

This article tells the story of how a crucial work of the French Enlightenment, Françoise de Graffigny’s Lettres d’une péruvienne, was rewritten in peninsular Spain, in a process full of cultural and personal connections –of friendship, patronage, intellectual and literary affinity or rivalry– across the Hispanic world. It combines textual analysis of the Spanish translation by María Rosario Romero (1792), by reconstructing the biographical profi…

  • Escribir la experiencia? Familia, identidad y reflexión intelectual en Inés Joyes (s. XVIII)

  • On Women's Reason, Education and Love

    Open Access•Mónica Bolufer Peruga, Isabel Morant Deusa•ARTICLE•Gender & History•1998•Cited by: 1

This article is an exploration of the ways in which Enlightenment discourse constructed the sentimental and intellectual ‘nature’ of women and of the ways cultivated women could situate themselves within this context. They were able to produce a discourse which shared Enlightenment arguments but also displayed a vital and intellectual distance from restrictive definitions of femininity. The lives and writings of three eighteenth‐century French an…
