LinkAges Colorado: Implementing Intergenerational Programs to Improve Connections Across Generations
Citizenship: From Three to Seven Principles of Belonging
Conventionally, three ‘laws’ are said to govern the recognition of citizenship. These are the laws of descent, birthplace and marriage. I question whether these are laws at all, and suggest that they are more like mutable principles underlying state practices that have evolved considerably in the last few decades. In addition to these three changing principles, I suggest that there are four other principles governing citizenship and social belong…
An education-based approach to aid in the prevention of cyberbullying
In this paper, we outline a multi-faceted technological approach for addressing the problem of cyberbullying, focussing on actions which can be taken within educational institutions, for students in elementary and secondary schools. Our proposals include a specific program to introduce in schools, one that will engage students to discourage cyberbullying. This is accompanied by a few distinct approaches for analyzing data within online social net…
North American Jewish NGOs and Strategies Used in Fighting BDS and the Boycott of Israeli Academia
Since the establishment of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement in 2005, organizations and institutions around the world have been trying to promote a boycott of Israeli academia. Against the BDS movement stand activists, Israeli diplomats, academics and Jewish organizations. Using the image repair theory and the multi-step model for altering image, this study sets out to analyze strategies used by seven NGOs in their fight agains…

Screening Strangers: Migration and Diaspora in Contemporary European Cinema. By Yosefa Loshitzky
This book comes replete with a generous encomium from Hamid Naficy, author of An Accented Cinema: Exilic and Diasporic Filmmaking (2001). The books invite comparison. Whereas Naficy was able to show how filmmakers from migrant backgrounds were beginning to find their voice, Loshitzy concentrates on how directors of both European and migrant origin are adjusting European national cinemas to take account of new transnational and diasporic realities…
Cinematic representations of diaspora: Italians and Jews
In this article we consider recent re-evaluations of the concept of diaspora and extend the notion of diasporic space using cinematic representations of two diasporic experiences, Italian and Jewish. The first film selected is the work of Edward Dmytryk, a controversial member of the Hollywood Ten (prominent film-makers who refused to disclose their political affiliations during the McCarthy period). The second film is the work of Joan Micklin Si…
A Billion Lives: An Eyewitness Report from the Frontlines of Humanity. By Jan Egeland
When Jan Egeland was 17, he wrote to a Catholic priest in Colombia: ‘I graduate from high school next summer and I am more than ready for something very different from my overprotected Norwegian affluence’ (p. 36). Thus began an extraordinary odyssey that grew from labouring in a peasant cooperative in Santander, to negotiating with the FARC and ELN on behalf of the UN and government of Colombia, initiating the Oslo peace accords in the Middle Ea…
Transnational Chinese: Fujianese Migrants in Europe. By Frank N. Pieke, Pal Nyiyi, Mette Thuno and Antonella Ceccagno
This book is concerned with a group of Chinese migrants from Fujian province who are by no means statistically representative of all Chinese migrants, let alone migrants from Asia in general. However, as the authors note, the Fujianese have become emblematic of the new migration flows to Europe. Changes to conventional patterns of migration are threefold. First, migrants from many origins have replaced the predictable source countries—former colo…

Conflict situations around the world regularly compel the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other humanitarian organizations to become involved in assisting both refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). Creolization and Cultural Globalization: The Soft Sounds of Fugitive Power
In this article, I provide a comparative discussion of Creoles and creolization. The core concept centres on the cross-fertilization between different cultures as they interact. When creolization occurs, participants select particular elements from incoming or inherited cultures, endow these with meanings different from those they possessed in the original cultures, and then creatively merge these to create new varieties that supersede the prior …

Children's Contribution to Household Labour in Three Sociocultural Contexts A Southern Indian Village, a Norwegian Town and a Canadian City
Using cross-cultural data, this paper explores the extent and nature of children's participation in household labour in three social settings: a Southern-Indian fishing village, a Norwegian town and a Canadian large urban centre. It examines the gender division of domestic labour among children and compares children's contributions to that of adults. Children's household production was always a structural necessity for the maintenance of rural ho…

Berkeley Free Speech Movement: Paving the way for campus activism
On most American college campuses today, students enjoy the same rights to free speech as do all citizens. They are free, for example, to raise money and distribute literature on behalf of political causes. But in the early 1960s these rights were still routinely denied collegians. When, in the fall of 1964, students at the University of California at Berkeley sought to attract campus support for the civil rights movement?which was working to end…
Is the period of rapidly declining adult mortality in the United States coming to an end
Age-standardized death rates from all causes for persons age 35-74 fell 23 per cent, 1968-1979. The monotonic decline was interrupted by only one period of excess influenza mortality. In the late 1970s, however, the decline in mortality decelerated and no further decrease was observed, 1979-1981. The recurrence of epidemic influenza contributed significantly to this trend although it would appear that the underlying mortality pattern has begun to…
