Feeling a little uneasy
This critical discourse analysis compares the ways in which White and BIPOC college students discuss their experiences of an educational intervention meant to promote better understanding of systemic racism. We analyzed reflective writing produced by 11 White psychology students from a private liberal arts college in the eastern United States and 17 BIPOC students from a Human Services program at a public university in the western United States. …
Sorry It Took a Pandemic and Multiple Murders to Get Here”
This study examined the impact of the racial justice movement that emerged in the United States after the murder of George Floyd and during the first year of the covid-19 pandemic on the discussion around equity and diversity initiatives in a predominantly White school district. We conducted thematic analyses of public communications of school district officials and community members and applied an epistemologies of ignorance framework that expla…
Interrogating Whiteness in Community Research and Action
Community psychology is expressly concerned with social justice. Such concern necessitates attention to race. Yet, nearly absent from the field’s literature is explicit and critical attention to whiteness. Thus, community psychology’s contribution to promoting social justice remains incomplete. In this article, we examine how a critical construction of whiteness can be useful for community research and action. After a brief history of the constru…
Managing the disconnect
AIMS: This critical ethnography interrogates the influence of neoliberalism on youth development practice as instituted by the evidence-based practice and positive youth development movements. METHODS: I employed participant observation and grounded theory analyses in my role as facilitator of a youth participatory action research program in the context of violence prevention work at a large urban youth development agency. RESULTS: The disconnect…
Ignoring History, Denying Racism
In demonstration of the Marley hypothesis, Nelson, Adams, and Salter showed that differences in critical historical knowledge (i.e., knowledge of past racism) and motivation to protect group esteem predicted present-day racism perceptions among Whites and Blacks attending different, racially homogenous universities. The present Study 1 conceptually replicates these findings among Whites and Blacks attending the same racially diverse university. C…
Linking Racial Identity, Ethnic Identity, and Racial-Ethnic Socialization
The relationship between racial and ethnic identity, as well as that between racial-ethnic socialization and racial and ethnic identity development, has become increasingly important to researchers as the proportion of children and young adults of color grows in the U.S. population. Parents’ racial-ethnic socialization messages are important for the ways in which children and young adults develop a sense of self as members of their racial or ethn…
Coping With LGBT and Racial–Ethnic‐Related Stressors
This study examines how racial–ethnic minority lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender ( LGBT ) youth cope with both racial–ethnic and LGBT ‐related stress. Within a sample of 213 LGBT youth of color, the present study presents (1) quantitative and qualitative results from an approach and avoidance–based measure of parental racial coping socialization across six conversation domains, and (2) qualitative responses regarding LGBT stressors and asso…
The Relation Between Parental Racial Socialization and African Americans' Racial Ideologies
Racial ideology shapes how African Americans interpret the world and cope with race-related issues and events. A complex interaction of individual, family, and group experiences in one's sociocultural and historical context is critical to the development of racial ideology. While parental racial socialization has been associated with racial identity, the more specific relationship between parental racial socialization and racial ideology is less …
