Biofuels’ unbalanced equations: Misleading statistics, networked knowledge and measured parameters. Part 3: Modelled marginal and spare land versus observed ecosystems
Competition for land between food and fuel crops dampened enthusiasm for biofuels cultivation as a mechanism for reducing European Union (EU) carbon emissions. Non-agricultural crops grown on marginal non-agricultural land, referred to as thirdgeneration biofuels, were proposed as a solution. Researchers and analysts used globalised statistics, databases and models to search for biofuels cropland. Two new categories of land emerged: the African G…
Biofuels’ unbalanced equations: Misleading statistics, networked knowledge and measured parameters
Biofuels were central to the European Union's early twenty-first-century responses to Kyoto-mandated carbon emissions reduction. This paper, the first part of three, traces the evolution of eight globalised soil, land and terrain databases and models underpinning global biofuels research. Central to the discussion are examination of the meaning and power of numbers; the significance of homogenising and harmonising data; and the decline of data qu…
Biofuels’ unbalanced equations: Misleading statistics, networked knowledge and measured parameters: Part 2. Networks, consensus and power
The independence of claims that biofuels can mitigate climate change is assessed using environmental history. The development of professional and institutional networks that produced both energy demand models and soil, land and terrain databases and models is traced, and the acquisition of significant unacknowledged social power is examined. Data literacy's critical perspective identified sources of embedded distortions, unacknowledged bias and i…

Environmental imaginaries of the Middle East and North Africa
Conservation Song: A history of peasant-state relations and the environment in Malawi, 1860-2000
Bravely rejecting a sharp division between colonial and post-colonial conservation policies, Mulwafu insists that Malawi's current conservation and sustainability debates should be informed by their social and environmental histories. Given the centrality of agriculture to Malawi's economy and the importance of access to soil, water, and forests to rural lives, even consideration of regulation or management has inherent political dimensions. Anal…
Electrifying africa: An environmental history with policy implications
The European Union anticipates alleviating future energy shortages and fulfilling renewable energy mandates by importing “green” electricity from Africa. Historical precedent and environmental consequences have largely been ignored. This article presents an environmental history of African electricity generation at a continental scale, tracing its parallel developments with colonialism, as well as its pursuit in the independence eras of developme…
Prehistory of Southern African Forestry: From Vegetable Garden to Tree Plantation
Desiccationist discourses and fears dominated official concern in nineteenth and early twentieth century southern Africa grassland ecosytsems. When scientific forestry arrived in Cape Town, government bureaucracies changed and Africa's first forestry department was created. Yet there were few trees in southern African grassland ecosystems requiring a forest service. Tree planting was advocated. The introduction of alien trees and their spread fro…

Oral evidence in historical environmental impact assessment: Soil conservation in Lesotho in the 1930s and 1940s
The data presented in this study were collected to test whether oral methodologies could be used in an ‘historical environmental impact assessment’ of Lesotho's first national soil conservation program in the 1930s and 1940s. Parallels are drawn between the use of oral evidence in the discipline of history and in environmental studies. Elderly informants were found who not only remembered the environmental conditions in detail, but who also descr…
