Ordine Nuovo as 1960s youth movement
With its 1956 exit from the Movimento sociale italiano (M.S.I.), the neo-Fascist group Ordine Nuovo (O.N.) changed from party faction into political sect. During the 1960s, when the ruling Christian Democrats opened to the left and the M.S.I.’s insertion strategy stalled, O.N. evolved further by sponsoring movement-like growth on the terrain of civil society. Based on official reports from provincial prefectures and police stations, this study tr…
Movement prefiguration as vocabulary of motive: Enacting neofascist ideals in CasaPound Italia
Both roads lead to Rome: Activist commitment and the identity-structure nexus in CasaPound
The primacy of networks vs. identities divides research on activism. Analyzing activist commitment in CasaPound, a movement organization of the far right in contemporary Italy, this paper advances a sequential multipath theory of activist commitment. In the recruitment phase either networks or identities suffice for movement entry. During the follow-up phase of integration, networks and identities reinforce each other: each is a necessary but no …
Militant democracy and successors to authoritarian ruling parties in post-1945 West Germany and Italy
This article contributes to the empirical literature on militant democracy and successor party bans by comparing post-1945 West Germany and Italy. These countries shared a right-authoritarian past but their tolerance of right-authoritarian parties differed. Looking for reasons behind the ban of the Sozialistische Reichspartei Deutschlands and the survival of the Movimento sociale italiano, this study tests five conditions: (1) ambiguity toward – …
Colonial past, voluntary association and far-right voting in France
We examine whether linked pluralism - association membership along cross-cutting lines - reduces the likelihood of voting for the far right. Data come from surveys of European ex-colonials (pieds noirs) conducted after the French national elections of 2002, 2007 and 2012. Results confirm that pied-noir support for far-right candidates in presidential and parliamentary elections greatly exceeded the average. This pattern was mediated by membership…
Ex-Colonials, Voluntary Associations, and Electoral Support for the Contemporary Far Right
Conditions of far‐right strength in contemporary Western Europe: An application of Kitschelt's theory
Applying the demand‐side claims of Kitschelt's theory, and the expectation that electoral systems affect voter choice, this article provides an explanation of cross‐national variation in support for new radical right (NRR) parties between 1982 and 1995. After discussing concepts and measures, two versions of qualitative comparative analysis (Boolean analysis and fuzzy‐set analysis) are applied to data for ten West European countries. The results …
Postmaterialism in Unresponsive Political Systems: The Canadian Case
Social Cleavage and the Revival of Far Right Parties: The Case of France's National Front
Does the left-right cleavage still structure citizen political behavior? What are the explanatory limits of cleavage politics? These questions are examined in light of support for a contemporary far right party, France's National Front. Though the predominance of former moderate right voters testifies to the cleavage's enduring influence, the weight of former left voters (especially those from the non-Communist left) indicates the importance of c…
